Flying when pregnant

I'm stressing out a little bit! I will be 28 weeks pregnant when we fly to Greece. The airline needs me to have a fit to fly form signed by my GP - these are needed from 28 weeks onwards. I've left it too late (as usual) to get this form completed...midwife didn't tell me I had to organise it 28 days in advance.

I'm not obviously pregnant, as in my bump isn't really obvious unless I point it our...especially if I wear loose clothes. I am very low risk.

Will there be problems on the flight if I don't have this form? If I don't tell them I'm pregnant? I really don't know what else to do...in worried they won't let me on!

It's Jet2 if that's relevant.

Has anyone else had a similar issue?

I'd imagine that if any emergency happened mid air and they had to divert or otherwise incur costs then your insurance wouldn't cover it.

If you dress tactically and don't mention anything they probably won't ask you but do just keep the above in mind. For a short flight I'd probably risk it, not for a long one.

Not sure whether you could get a fit to fly certificate privately?

Why would you need 28 days in advance ? It's a private service from your GP.

I didn't start wearing my maternity clothes until I was 34 weeks pregnant, but we flew at five months and I was told off for queuing to go to the toilet by the air stewardess - she could obviously tell I was pregnant. Apparently pregnant ladies shouldn't be stood on flights in case of an emergency!

You don’t need one 28 days in advance.

I flew at 28 weeks pregnant this year and was reviewed by the obstetrician (literally a 5 minute convo) and got my fit to fly letter 5 days before flying. Nobody asked to see it but was reassuring to have. How long before you fly?

LIZS · 01/08/2022 15:22

How long are you going for? If you had pg related issues or the baby was premature will your insurance cover you without a letter? You may be denied the return flight in which case you get stuck in Greece. Can your gp not sign it for you? 28 days seems way too far in advance, things can easily change.

Your travel insurance won't cover you without it. Ask you gp it isn't cheap though

No idea on rules about getting one, I flew at 32 weeks and my midwife just typed one up at my last appointment before the flight. I was very obviously pregnant and was only asked to show the letter on the way home, no-one asked on the way out. But you don't want to risk invalidating your insurance.

Thanks everyone - phone up the doctors again and sorted it. The first receptionist obviously didn't know what she was talking about!
