Keeping original packaging

Do you keep all the boxes that appliances and the like come in? I'm having a clear out and have boxes for laptops, sewing machines, the cat flap etc
It's making me nervous to throw them away in case I need to make a claim on a warranty or something or are they really not necessary?

The packaging is only necessary if you are taking sonething back "as sold". Please do not worry about throwing it out. Keep the paperwork, sure, but not the packaging.

Marking place as I’m in the same situation!

I think keeping the receipt is the most important thing, but I hold onto to boxes and instruction leaflets as well.

PiggySue · 01/08/2022 13:16

Ah instruction leaflets, yes I've been able to definitely decide to keep them.
I could store them in the garage where I'd never actually get them from because spiders but would still have them just in case.
Or no?

the boxes can be handy if you are returning something through the post that has a fault, or if you are selling something, but they are not required. If you don't have the space then ok to toss them.

PiggySue · 01/08/2022 13:16

And receipts yes
(must organise receipts and leaflets)

The only boxes we keep are for DS gaming stuff. When he upgrades and sells the old tech it tends to fetch a better price.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 01/08/2022 13:20

I get rid of packaging. When my now adult DC were in gaming, as a PP said, we would keep the boxes so he could resell. But ( don't want a load of boxes! I don't keep anything in my loft or garage, so they'd seriously get in the way 😂

BatshitCrazyWoman · 01/08/2022 13:20

*into 🙄

PiggySue · 01/08/2022 13:21

Ok thanks for the reassurance. I'll make so much space!

I usually do keep boxes for things that are expensive and have resale value. Recently sold a Sage coffee machine for not much less than I originally paid. A box for a 10 year old kettle I would chuck though.

Mydogisagentleman · 01/08/2022 13:24

My DH is a great believer in keeping the boxes from appliances.
Our tv is 12 years old and has been shipped to three different countries and two houses in the uk.
the box is on the rafters in the garage. I got a new toaster and kettle recently m before either were used, he taken the boxes to the loft. His hoarding is legendary in our family

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 01/08/2022 13:25

I get rid after the first week. If an item isn’t faulty straight away, and last a week it’s going to be ok until the day after the warranty expires. Instructions get files until the item dies. Getting hold of a cardboard box to send something is easily done, just ask on Facebook, someone always has a box from Amazon etc.

Blackdiame · 01/08/2022 13:55

I've kept the box for our PC's and the TV just because it makes life easier when we move house but its up in the loft out the way.

Re instruction leaflets, we have a binder folder with plastic wallets in it tucked away in a kitchen cupboard that has all the useful leaflets (i.e. the ones that tell you had to re-programme the oven clock because it's impossible to remember when you only have to do it every six months!). You could keep the receipts with that too.

I was only having this conversation about boxes yesterday with DH as he was wanting to keep a shoe box "just in case" something happens to the shoes.

I kindly pointed out that people that many people don't have the space to store the original packaging for everything they've bought and you can still get replacements/refunds if things go wrong. We only did it ourselves a few weeks ago when a new electronic item broke and had to be replaced. That box was huge so had been recycled weeks earlier.
