First Aid courses

Another year has gone by since I lost my son.
If your children are off to university in September, please consider getting them to do a first aid course. Just a basic understanding of how and when to get help, how to place someone in the recovery position. St John Ambulance and Red Cross offer courses.
It could save a life.

Agree!
I went to a Red Cross one last month. Second time I've been.

4hrs and £40 and could make all the difference.
And remind them to donate blood and check their smoke alarms (see my username!)

I'm so sorry about your son.
Thank you for thinking of others.

Also encourage them to do a self-defence course. A lot of it is about prevention/staying safe rather than martial arts etc.

Yes, and being aware of spiking and how to recognise the effects and what to do if it happens. Just having the knowledge and confidence to intervene if someone needs help.

So sorry for your loss Flowers
I completely agree with you. I volunteer in girl guiding, we cover first aid and fire safely as part of our programme for girls aged 4 to 18. I think it really should be part of the school curriculum, such an essential skill to have.

Just bumping for the evening people.

Scouts and explorers cover it. My daughter is a young leader and it was given to her by the Scouts

Yes, you can ask the local fire service to come out and risk assess your property, fit smoke alarms for you and recommend an escape plan.

I've seen online that you should do "drills" with your kids for if there's a fire or an intruder.

As teens both my kids put drunk friends in the recovery position when they passed out before the drunks vomited; @endofthelinefinally I am so sorry for your loss. This has inspired me to see if we can put together a first aid course for students.

I am so sorry for your loss.
Unimaginable to lose a child, for most people. Flowers

My dc have all done First Aid throughout their time in Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and then as Leaders in Scouts.
It is an excellent skill to have.
1 dc has stepped up to help members of the public who needed First Aid twice.

I'm so sorry to hear about your son.

I think first aid lessons should be compulsory for all above 10 or so. A course every couple of years. It takes what, a few hours? Could make such a massive difference if everyone knew what to do. Even for minor things, you still get people who put butter on burns! Education is the way forward.

I agre @PestoPasghetti .
