Does anyone have private dental cover?

Weighing up whether it would be worth this for the family (me, DH and two kids). It takes bloody forever to get appointments on the NHS and even waiting for treatments you urgently need takes forever. But private cover seems so costly I seriously hope you get stellar service for your money! Has anyone gone private and feels it's definitely worth the expense?

We have Denplan - is that the sort of thing you mean?

WildWombat · 31/07/2022 12:44

I guess so. Any cover that means you can get appointments and treatment quickly and efficiently!

We have private dental from DHs work. You can always get appointments basically whenever you want, but the monthly fee doesn’t cover everything. However, I haven’t been able to get NHS dental treatment since I was a child so it’s very worth it vs not having any cover!

Also a proper check up that isn’t just quickly looking in your mouth . I’m reluctantly thinking the same.

I've just switched. You can either pay "as you go", take out a monthly insurance plan, or split cos over 12 months.

Honestly I wish I’d got Denplan years ago before I had some major problems.

BinleyMegaChippy · 31/07/2022 13:03

We are on Denplan and it's around £55 a month for myself and two DDs.
Worth every penny.

KatharineofAragon · 31/07/2022 13:06

i have very little trouble with my teeth but OH has had everything under the sun . Is it worth it for me do you think? I just need check ups and a good clean.

Gatekeeper · 31/07/2022 13:07

I have Denplan as I have veneers and pay about 19£ a month. Worth it for me as I've had all my amalgam fillings replaced with white composite and haven't had to pay anything extra for the last 15 years. Dentist is fab and plan on veneers being replaced in next year as they are ancient

I have private, not Denplan but similar, I have had it 3 years and would never go back. It is definitely worth the expense. I cannot abide all the fucking about and time wasting - especially my time, on the NHS now, both with dentists and otherwise.

Isonthecase · 31/07/2022 13:16

We have private dental and I wouldn't say it's worth it. I pay to top up the work one so it covers the rest of the family and it costs plenty but they usually only pay out half the cost of the treatment, if that. I've queried it and they said the dentist was expensive but he's cheaper than my previous NHS one!

GoodVibesHere · 31/07/2022 13:22

Yes we have Denplan. I thought most people do these days as there is no NHS provision.

In which case, yes I’d say it’s worth it for peace of mind. I pay £40 per month for DS and I.

justasking111 · 31/07/2022 13:31

Denplan here it was that or be removed from their list

noway1000 · 31/07/2022 13:35

It is usually better to just 'pay as you go' privately. If your teeth are healthy, regular check-ups and dental hygiene visits are a fixed cost which there is no point in insuring against. Just budget for them as you would haircuts etc.

noway1000 · 31/07/2022 13:36

'Pay as you go' where you pay a realistic amount for check ups also removes any incentive to find unnecessary work.

NorthernPud · 31/07/2022 14:31

My dentist introduced a private service for an annual fee. If I hadn't taken that up he would no longer have seen my children. I do find it's much easier to find appointments than before.
