London between Xmas and NY

With a bit of luck me and DP are hopefully going to get tickets for the Darts world championships at Alexandra Palace for the 27th, 28th or 29th Dec. We live about 3 hours away by train (although may end up driving part of the way depending on maintenance works) so we are thinking of turning it into a 2 or 3 night trip instead as we both get Xmas off work.

I have been to London a lot but never over the Xmas period so I have a couple of questions before we decide how long to stay for! How busy is it generally around that time? I can't work out whether I would expect it to be quieter than usual or busier than usual! Another thing is the tube, is there often maintenance work over the Xmas period? We will probably stay centrally if we are coming for more than one night and will use the tube a lot to get about, if there is maintenance is there plenty of buses to use instead or do they get reduced as well? (Sorry if that's a stupid question!)

Finally there's plenty of things I would like to do that we could fill our time with but just wondering if there is anything nice to do between Xmas and NY specifically? It's just me and DP, we are late 20's and happy to try different things! Thanks for any suggestions!

It's my favourite time to go but very busy round the tourist hotspots lots of Spanish people on city breaks or so it seemed!

Covent Garden tube station shut for over crowding. And leiciseter square tube station which is the. Ect nearest was unbelievable I have never seen anything like it but it was fine, more of a spectacle than a problem.

Covent Garden is lovely. Lots of sparkly lights and trees. Fond memories

London between Christmas and new year is great. Fairly quiet but still lots going on. Can't comment on likelihood of tube closures, it's been so long since "normal" my opinions are a bit out of date! I'd say it would be fine though

Highly unlikely to be tube closures. My idea of hell but lots of people hitting the sales. Great time to ice skate, go to Winter Wonderland or the Southbank Christmas market.

Fab thanks all!

Definitely no hitting the sales! Ice skating is a good idea and I had wondered about a Christmas market so that's good to know thanks Smile
