Which West End musical for theatre-loving 12 year old?

Thinking of doing a day trip to London to see a show with my theatre-mad 12 year old daughter.
We have seen Matilda (touring), Blood Brothers, Hairspray, Les Miserables, and Six. We're seeing the Lion King in December.

What would you recommend?
I think I'm between:
Frozen
Matilda again
Wicked
I'd like to see Dear Evan Hansen but I wonder if it's just a touch grown-up for her and I think it might go on tour when it finishes it's run in October?

Is kinky boots still on?

I took my 12 and 14 yr olds to see come from away last year. I wasn't sure how they'd like it as obviously they weren't even born when 9/11 happened. But it's now both their favourite of all the shows they've seen and I loved it too. So much that we're going again in August as it's finishing it's run in January and I couldn't bear not to see it again. I've never been to any other show twice.

I’m also desperate to see Come From Away again and am so sad it is closing, it’s an absolutely wonderful, wonderful show.

Of your list OP I’d say Wicked as that’s what we’re off to see soon! We saw Hamilton last year and it was also fantastic though we had watched the recording beforehand so knew a lot of what to expect

I’ve seen all shows in your list and would choose Frozen (as you’ve already seen Matilda). As mentioned by others Come from away is fantastic.
Ive seen Wicked and just didn’t enjoy very much.

Tickledtrout · 30/07/2022 15:54

Another vote for Wicked. Absolutely

MirandaWest · 30/07/2022 15:54

My 16 year old DD says Wicked

leccybill · 30/07/2022 15:56

Wicked def seems a bit marmite!

If you are going in August - this ends tomorrow! Wicked/&Juliet/Six/Mary Poppins are all good but I would go with what you can get for the best price in the best seat!

Thanks so much, this could save me lots of money. Looking now!

Yep Wicked here too. Hamilton is great but the first couple of times I saw it on Disney plus I didn't understand the story as it's songs all the way through and you have to pay attention to the words. It's alot to take in (for me anyway!)

Figgygal · 30/07/2022 15:58

I hated wicked so id say &juliet, hamilton or back to the future

AllFreeOwls · 30/07/2022 16:02

I saw Frozen recently and take enjoyed it. I'd also recommend Mary Poppins, that was amazing!

Mommabear20 · 30/07/2022 16:03

Wicked every time! It's funny, sad, fantastic songs, and deals with very real and relatable subjects.

CatatonicLadybug · 30/07/2022 16:06

I would vote Wicked for those choices too. To the reviews that are critical of the plot and the audibility…

…the plot is silly and fantastical. I’m not sure how people expect something serious based on a backstory of the wizard of Oz.
…this theatre is HUGE. The closer you can get, the better. (Well, preferably not like the first three rows, but other than that.) You do lose the details of the costuming and some sound quality as you go further back. It’s still fun from the back in the cheap seats, but there is lots more to see closer if it’s in your budget.

TheTeenageYears · 30/07/2022 16:14

Beauty & the Beast is absolutely spectacular, I would strongly recommend. Cinderella if it hasn't already closed. Come from Away is phenomenal (closing in Feb) and Hamilton is all consuming.

leccybill · 30/07/2022 17:06

Thanks for the suggestions of musicals I hadn't considered!

Come From Away or Hamilton.

I absolutely hated Wicked, but a 12 year old might like it.

ExhaustedPigeon · 30/07/2022 17:24

I've taken groups of Y6 to Wicked and they all loved it. I'm taking my daughter this week as she has been wanting to see it for ages. Got the kids week tickets so only paid for mine and she has got an invite for a q and a with some of the cast afterwards. Can't wait

In no particular order (I am lucky enough to live in London and have a friend in the biz so get many comps) - I don't like Lloyd Webber and not a fan of Les Mis type all music no talking musicals...

& Juliet - not as good as the hype but a fun one with familiar songs - 12 year old would enjoy
Frozen - felt a bit panto - aimed at younger ones
Wicked - seen twice and didn't enjoy either time (everyone loves it so thought I must have gone on an off night) wouldn't recommend to anyone
Moulin Rouge - great fun (but not like the film) - OK for 12 year old IMO
Dear Evan Hanson - didn't expect to like - was surprised how much I did like it would take 11 year old to see it no problem
Book of Mormon - feel so guilty for enjoying - I am sure I wasnt supposed to - not appropriate for 12 year old IMO
Mama Mia - saw years back - enjoyed but can't remember a thing about it
BTTF - brilliant fun - highly recommend
Heathers - love it love it love it - took DS14 and he loved it too - sound track on in house all the time - but may not be age appropriate for some
Cabaret - blown away, speechless, powerful, emotional, amazing - saw with original cast and have tix for October to see again - maybe not for the kids though I'd recommend anyone to go if they can - there are often £30 tickets
Lion King - disappointing, boring....
Matilda - love it - was a house favourite for a while
Grease - not seen it myself but DD has been about 3 times and loves it
Hamilton - not supposed to say this - but really didn't enjoy it - Emperors new clothes
Anything Goes - not seen yet but going next week
Kinky Boots coming back - really enjoy that last time it was on

Anotherdayanotherdisappointment · 30/07/2022 17:37

Drifters Girl

DD loved it! (Although she loves any musical) we've been singing "Backseat at the movies" for the past 4 months non-stop.

tinkerbellvspredator · 30/07/2022 17:47

Wicked - been twice. First time was with original cast (Idina Menzel!) and I really enjoyed it. Went again with DD (age 10ish) many years later, thought it was a bit meh. DD liked it though.

I'd highly recommend Back to the Future. Saw it last week with DD 12. We both loved it. She had seen the film a few months ago. I think better if they've seen the film first.

cheeseisthebest · 30/07/2022 17:58

I agree about lion King, thought it was awful.

I also recommended this earlier - we saw it last night and thought the special effects were fantastic!.

Smashedavacado · 30/07/2022 21:45

Just noticed there are some really good prices for Come from Away tickets in August. Done good stalls seats for £30. I've seen it already and loved it - considering going again but also wondering about Sister Act. May have to do both on our upcoming visit. Anyone seen Sister Act?

theclangersarecoming · 30/07/2022 21:51

Back To The Future is great!

Wishihadanalgorithm · 30/07/2022 23:13

Back to the Future is amazing! That would be my recommendation.
