Parking near birmingham uni (commonwealth games)

Hi
we are heading to the hockey at Birmingham on Monday which is at the Uni hockey pitch. Had a million emails to say there is no official parking. Fair enough.

we will park and ride if we must but can anyway who knows the area confirm that there will be someone to park in the surrounding area. We don’t mind a bit of a walk. Ideas of which area to head to would be great as I don’t know that area at all.

Somewhere not someone!

There's going to be a thousand other people thinking the same as you, and very likely special parking restrictions for the event. I think you'd save yourself a lot of time and stress if you used the park and ride.

SpottyStripyDuvet · 30/07/2022 12:35

Park and ride is probably best but you could use one of the car parks off Harborne High Street (eg York Street) and then walk to the uni. It is about a mile.

Cornettoninja · 30/07/2022 12:36

Park and ride definitely. I’m not in birmingham anymore but transport along the Bristol road has always been good and pretty reliable. I’d be shocked if it wasn’t a main route for the games.

That gives you parking options starting from Longbridge/Rubery and shouldn’t take more than 20 mins max to get to the uni campus.

MardiBras · 30/07/2022 12:37

There’s a train station at Birmingham Uni. It’s easier to park further away and get the train there.

Cornettoninja · 30/07/2022 12:40

If you do get a bus, you can only use one card per person per transaction (so you’d need two cards to buy two fares but only one card to buy a family all day ticket for about £7). Or the right change.

found that out on a recent visit back to Brum!

Frazzled2207 · 30/07/2022 12:41

Thanks to clarify there is no official park and ride for the hockey it would be a case of getting the train to the uni from somewhere else and we don’t really want to go near new street

i used the “official” journey planner that they sent me and it comes up with either a combination of four different trains or “drive and park nearby”.

That is very helpful thanks

When DH went to uni open day recently with DS2 there was a train strike. I found them a private drive way to park on 10min walk from uni via Just Park. It was dead easy.

I was just trying to remember the names of some of these parking rental apps. It’s a good shout @Frazzled2207

Frazzled2207 · 30/07/2022 12:48

Thanks will look into the parking apps

also wondering if parking at/near selly oak or bournville stations could be viable

NerrSnerr · 30/07/2022 13:31

The University station is on the Reddich- Litchfield line so would be easy to park and ride from one of those stations.

Cornettoninja · 30/07/2022 13:51

I don’t fancy your chances parking in Selly oak or bournville without renting someone’s drive. longbridge station is right across the road from a retail park and massive sainsburys for paid parking. Also gives you the option of a bus straight up the Bristol road.

senua · 30/07/2022 13:59

What is your route into Birmingham? - that will affect the best answer for you.

Floydthebarber · 30/07/2022 14:03

A lot of the roads around all the sites have got temporary double yellow lines or permit restrictions for the games. Definitely better to park somewhere along the Litchfield-Reditch line and get the train. Or use one of the park and rides.

Floydthebarber · 30/07/2022 14:04

Selly Oak, Bournville are difficult to park anyway. You will need to go at least to Kings Norton.

User478 · 30/07/2022 14:05

Your ticket for the games also includes public transport (from within the Birmingham area network) if that helps?

RebeccaCloud9 · 30/07/2022 14:08

I went to the games (not at the uni) yesterday and found the journey planning and website really difficult and stressful. However, the actual public transport, shuttles etc ran brilliantly on the day and everything went smoothly, for free and with no long queues.
Try and find if there are any shuttle buses running. Lots of people parked at a train station yesterday and got the free shuttle from there. Sorry can't help with specifics!

Coming from Manchester.

I'd definitely do train then, the uni is about 10 minutes train ride and dead easy to do.

Parking is a nightmare round the uni at the moment.

BuwchGochGota · 30/07/2022 14:46

We were at the hockey there yesterday and I would 100% recommend the train. They've put extra carriages on all the services passing through there, and trains are roughly every 10 minutes. It is well organised and they get everyone through to the platform pretty quickly in an organised queue - they were even handing out sweets.

We actually did the whole journey by train (we live 3hrs away from Birmingham) and New Street station was also really organised and didn't feel any busier than usual.

All credit to Birmingham, the organisation is spot on.

Good to know
train all the way from Manchester for 4 is prohibitively expensive but train the last part of the way seems like a goer as long as I can find a station where we can park.
longbridge seems possible -
wonder if somewhere north of the city could work also as we are coming from that direction

OP posts:
NerrSnerr · 30/07/2022 14:50

Lichfield is the first stop of the Trainline for university which is north of Brum.

Not my area of expertise, but can you:
pick up the Wolverhampton tram (don't know how far out the concession tickets go) into central Brum
-then the Cross-City line out to University station.
