Why get lots of tattoos?

Why do people who have lots of tattoos get so many? I ask because I have a relative who gets them so often that it seems like an addiction. I don't know if she is happy and wonder if it's a bit of a coping mechanism for something. Or not, maybe she just likes it.

FWIW I have no tattoos myself and no strong feelings about them, just interested.

can't speak for having "loads" but I think for a lot of people they're an expression of art/personality - especially the ones that have meaning behind them (which is seriously attractive, in my opinion). I only have one but it's a matching one with my siblings and we chose it so we'd always feel close to each other.

ChezVous77 · 30/07/2022 00:03

I don't like tattoos personally but it's their body and choice! I'm sure it can be very addictive for some. I'm pleased I haven't got any though as I know I would have regretted them.

@squashandrun that's lovely.

Try harder, that was a weak attempt at bait

It was a joke, given that’s the way these threads usually run 🙄

Well, unless you've died in the arms of your young lover after a meal at a Michelin starred restaurant, no-one is going to look good as a corpse, so strike that from any list of concerns.

I don't have any, my personal choice, but many colleagues do, as did the person dealing with me at the Building Society, the nurse who took my bloods, mainstream telly folk like Fern Britton, David Dimbleby..... it's really just a common thing nowadays.
They're expensive, but clearly lots of people still have a disposable income - see also brow bars and nail salons.

Treely · 30/07/2022 07:33

I can't help thinking about how they will look when you are elderly, or a corpse.
everyone looks shit when they're dead, regardless of tattoos or none. Confused

"Why do people who have lots of tattoos get so many?"

Because if they didn't get so many they wouldn't have a.lot, or to put it another way if they didn't have a lot they wouldn't have so many. 😂

Oh gosh what if I’m an ugly corpse??? Who will want to date me then? How will I find work as a hideous corpse?

I love how 'what about when you're a corpse' was a serious counterpoint to tattoos😂😂

I looked after a lady in her 80s who had a whole load of tattoos, her first one she had from when she was very young in the 50s and then she got more throughout her life.
They looked brilliant on her, I loved that they showed this side of her that people didn't expect, as people always assumed all of the residents were going to be sitting quietly in armchairs in pastel cardigans.
Like obviously they were fading and the pictures were not as crisp anymore, but she looked badass and it suited her completly.

No-ones skin looks brilliant in their 80s, the tattoos aged just like the rest of her and she looked great.
Plus she had a massive dragon on her back and that was a fun suprise the 1st time I helped her in the shower.

Winebottle · 30/07/2022 07:58

I think it is because people think they look good.

I don't buy the addiction/self harm explanation. I saw two young, otherwise normal looking, lads in their early 20s in the pub yesterday with multiple face tattoos. I did feel a bit sad and wondered why they have chosen to do that to themselves but I'm sure they think they're cool.

I think many will come to regret them. Every dickhead has a sleeve tattoo and a skin fade haircut. I predict both will go out of fashion.

Onesmallstepforaman · 30/07/2022 08:04

I had a a lot of tattoos when I was younger, not arty. Had them lasered in my twenties as my particular tattoos were projecting an image I no longer wanted. I don't regret either decision. I wonder about some of the bog standard stuff I see on heads faces.

Lazyiam · 30/07/2022 08:11

I've never seen one yet that doesn't just look like a dirty green mark, but own choice I guess!

WonderingWanda · 30/07/2022 08:17

Because they like them, they like the image it portrays. Tatoos are quite fashionable these days. It's the same as getting your hair dyed, nails done, fake tan, buying particular clothing. It's just a way of expressing individuality.

MsMiaWallace · 30/07/2022 08:23

Because why wouldn't you?

If anything some people need educating to the art of tattoos.,
Avoiding crap artists too!

And how amazing would an elderly person look with full sleeves!!?!!

I got some colourful Japanese flowers on my lower back when in my 20's because it was "cool", edgy and I like Japanese flowers. I'm 45 yo now and totally regret it. I am not that person I was on my 20's, I've changed a lot (which is what usually happens when you age). I look at all these young girls covered in ink head to toe and I think "Oh dear...". I feel sorry for them. Laser doctors are going to get rich in some years.

Each to their own but I feel a bit sad for you that you regret it. I have a small tattoo on my thigh I had when I was 17.

Would I pick the same design again now? No.
Would I have it in the same place now? No.
Would I have a coloured tattoo now? No.

I don't regret it though. It's part of me and a reflection of who I was at that age. I've toyed over the years with the idea of having it covered / extended into something more reflective of me now, but never got around to it & probably never will.

Sux2buthen · 30/07/2022 08:49

@Baaaaaa a corpse😂😂

Sux2buthen · 30/07/2022 08:50

@ShirleyPhallus sorry I got your tone wrong Blush
There's some snooty buggers on here, my mistake

Sandra1984 · 30/07/2022 08:56

IDreamOfTheMoors · 29/07/2022 23:46

@Sandra1984

I get this. I wonder what they’ll feel when they’re 95 & have all those tats from when they were 20.
Plus I heard getting them lasered off is excruciatingly painful, so many people just end up leaving them.
Makes me think of Pete Davidson - he’s had some removed.

I doubt I'll live to 95, but I'm already a young and lively 45 and totally regret those bloody flowers on my ass. The reason I haven't got rid of them is because it's a large tat and laser is expensive and painful. Thank god they are hidden when I'm clothed and only show if I'm in a bikini. By the way: they looked gorgeous when I first got them 20 years ago but ink fades, skin sags and changes texture as you age, so what looked like a beautiful flowery Japanese garden at the beginning is starting to look like an ugly desaturated salad.

Don't get a tattoo.

Sandra1984 · 30/07/2022 08:58

@QueSyrahSyrah Each to their own but I feel a bit sad for you that you regret it.

Me too.

Perpetualstateofchaos · 30/07/2022 08:59

If people ask I will only 1 is obviously a memorial tattoo. Tbh most people just think I liked them and got them.

Blanketpolicy · 30/07/2022 09:02

A fresh tattoo with sharp edges and done by one of the best is a true work of art.

Unfortunately most age in about 10 short years, the colour starts to fade, they lose their sharpness, lose/gain weight distorts them and they look terrible. If they stayed fresh and sharp looking and didnt breakdown into something which imo is really ugly I would have considered one.

My niece had a series of tiny black paw prints on her ankle/foot in memory of a lost pet that now, just 6 years on, look like blurry stained blue misshappen dots and she hates them. She also had black lettering on her wrist that is now an illegible blue fuzz.

Clairewentoverthemountain · 30/07/2022 09:09

Because people are different and like different things and this person presumably likes tattoos?
