Threadworms

CrispsAndChoc · 29/07/2022 21:14

My 6 year old has threadworms and we have just spotted them. We haven’t had them in the house before so has anyone any tips? My husband has gone out to buy the medicine for us all and we will put everything through a hot wash tomorrow. She’s very upset because the itching is really bad-any ideas how I can alleviate the itching in the meantime? Thanks in advance.

Barrier cream of some kind between her anus and her vagina. Having to remove a thread worm from a small girls vagina (my own Dd) is one of my least favourite experiences.☹️

Cantchooseaname · 29/07/2022 21:20

Slather anus in Vaseline- can reduce the wriggling sensation.
the oral medicine was quick and effective here.

Thislittlekitten · 29/07/2022 21:22

Agree re Vaseline or a barrier type cream. Also coconut oil helps too.

The medicine is vey quick acting. Poor thing it’s awful to see them suffer through it.

Piriton might help with itching

CuriositysCat · 29/07/2022 21:27

Yes, Vaseline or Sudocrem and the oral medicine. At least it’s not the foul-tasting ‘milkshake’ concoction that I had to take as a child: makes me retch just thinking about it!
A cool shower can help too in the short term.

Christ we had a whole fucking year of them until the bloody school chucked the play dough which was harbouring the eggs all the kids were sticking their fingers in <vomit>

Put her in a shallow bath and get her to clean all around her vagina and bum with her fingers, splash water in and out. Those bastards hide between any tiny fold of skin and they are so itchy.

Slather in Vaseline. All around bum and vagina

CUT HER NAILS as short as possible. Eggs under the nails if she’s been itching

Treat everyone with Ovex. Then do it again in a month

Boil wash everything

Camalia · 29/07/2022 21:36

Hopefully it’s just one case. DDs whole case was rife with them. They did a whole deep clean of the classroom and like I said threw away the play dough!

RedLemonade · 29/07/2022 21:48

Agree with @Camalia and will also add that I wiped all bedsteads, bedside tables, skirting boards in bedrooms, door handles daily and gave all toilets, sinks a thorough daily clean, replaced all toothbrushes and stored them in the airing cupboard rather than the bathroom during treatment period plus changed hand towels every day for two weeks (IIRC)- then treated everyone again.

I was OBSESSED with getting rid of the tiny bastards having heard horror stories of repeated infection on here! Also because they actually really hurt my DD- she was so sore and itchy and so upset. I hate the little punks😡

Mummyme87 · 29/07/2022 21:52

My boys have had them a few times. It’s such a pain. I find a wet flannel between the bum cheeks reduces the itching. Medicine seems to work wel though

CrispsAndChoc · 29/07/2022 21:54

Thanks everyone. We’ve just taken the Ovex-tastes ok thankfully-put sudocream on her and had another shower. She hasn’t played with the play-doh or slime for over a week so I'm hoping it’s not infested! Lots of washing for tomorrow. The itching is still really bothering her so I think we’re in for a long night. I’m really hoping the ovex takes the itch away soon.

Medicine can take a day or two to work
Reduce sugar intake
Pants on in bed
Shallow bath

Lastminutebride · 20/12/2022 16:50

Hi
any advice on how long it takes after medication to clear up?
my dd took a dose of ovex this morning, is it wishful thinking to hope they’ll have gone by tonight? She was is so much pain last night bless her. Having just looked I can see tiny white dots in her bottom so I’m guessing these will hatch later and cause intense itching again 😩

mushforbrain · 20/12/2022 16:53

My DD always screams the house down with worms, it’s really distressing, but has only ever been one night, the ovex seems to be very efficient.

Lastminutebride · 20/12/2022 17:09

That’s reassuring. We’ve had two very unsettled nights and she’s just been inconsolable due to the pain, I didn’t realise what it was at first. Fingers crossed the medications started to work. I guess only time will tell

Notoironing · 20/12/2022 17:15

We just had this issue. As well as worming the whole family, deep clean everything as said above, for the night time itch I used a bite and sting cream from boots which seems to help.
hopefully they won’t come back because seeing them gave me nightmares!

Notoironing · 20/12/2022 17:16

Also everyone showers as soon as they get up and into clean clothes

Johnnyripples · 20/12/2022 17:20

Also tumble dry or iron pants and pjs, especially around seams. We had them on and off for years and it was a hard slog. I hope you are rid soon, make sure you take the 2nd dose!

Lastminutebride · 20/12/2022 18:54

i barely slept last night after seeing them, they gave me nightmares! I really hope they go quickly and don’t come back, I’m not sure I’d cope.
All bedding washed, house cleaned top to bottom, showered and clean clothes this morning. trying to stop my daughter itchy but that’s not easy

Lastminutebride · 20/12/2022 18:55

Thanks for this tip, I’ll get ironing tomorrow.
