Things to do with teens in Leeds

Spending. A week north Peak District with two teens and a dog.

Any recommendations of things to keep them interested. Teen dd likes to shop. They don't mind museums and the odd historical house but we will have a dog with us so might have to tag team it a bit.

Thanks

Are you looking specifically in Leeds city, or for things in that sort of area?

Dowisetrepla · 29/07/2022 20:23

Bit confused as I wouldn’t describe Leeds as north Peak District but you could look at Yorkshire sculpture park which is lovely and dog friendly. In Leeds itself you could look at Roxy lanes or junkyard golf club depending on their ages, there are a few escape room type experiences, shopping in Leeds is good too.

Really recommend the Thackray Museum of Medicine in Leeds city itself. Has a very gruesome but informative 'disease street' that my kids loved!

whenwillthemadnessend · 29/07/2022 20:28

Thanks. We are staying in north peaks but have car so can go Leeds Sheffield or even Manchester.

The Keighley and Worth Valley railway is brilliant. Stop off at Haworth for lots of funky little shops and cafes. You can take your dog on the train.

National Media Museum in Bradford is also good - I think you have to book in advance now but it's free. I would recommend going by train because Bradford isn't easy to drive around if you don't know the city.

Leeds isn't really near the north peaks? Where is the nearest big town to where you are staying? Glossop/ bakewell Buxton/ Castletown/ hathersage? etc?

Sheffield city centre is good (not been post though) and Meadowhall is good for clothes shopping.

Octomore · 29/07/2022 21:15

Sheffield is a lot more logical for a city day out from the north peak!

BarbaraofSeville · 29/07/2022 21:51

Another one confused by Leeds being in the Peak District.

If you want to go into Leeds there's the Trinity Centre for shops, cinema and street food or restaurants. Also Corn Exchange and Royal Armouries.

I know they are not in the area exactly but we can get there fairly easily park and ride etc or train We are near chatsworth.

Mine really liked the cat cafe.

From near Chatsworth I would definitely just go to Sheffield for a city day trip. The ice rink is good and not far from Meadowhall for shopping - not so dog friendly though.

You could go a bit further to Brodsworth Hall near Doncaster for history or Roche Abbey is very picturesque at the bottom of a valley by a stream. Yorkshire sculpture park is a bit further but a nice day out. To be honest though near Chatsworth there are plenty of stunning historic houses - Haddon Hall, Bolsover, Old Hardwick and the "new" Hardwick.

Leeds is just good to wander around. Lots of shops. A classic old market. Corn Exchange. Leeds Docks area. More shops and shopping arcades. Leeds is very Victorian in its architecture.

You can get to Roundhay Park which is good big park.

There's always York.

Leeds is great, but would be a more than a bit bizarre to drive from the Peak District to Roundhay in order to spend time in a big green space!

Well - if they get bored of wandering around Leeds and want to take their dog for a walk.

Sheffield's nice -we recently found the Botanical Gardens there which was interesting.

AnnaMagnani · 30/07/2022 10:36

Yorkshire Sculpture Park
City centre is good for wandering round + teen will like shopping
Harewood House had something for everyone (unless your teen is supercool)

Octomore · 30/07/2022 10:39

Tbh, I think if using the P&R to get into Leeds, they'd be restricted to the centre anyway. Transport isn't really good enough to easily hop around the outskirts and then back to the P&R.

The art gallery and arcades/corn exchange are all central though.

Octomore · 30/07/2022 10:40

Drivong drom the Peak to Hardwood involves going all the way around/through Leeds. I wouldn't bother tbh - Sheffield and the sculpture park both much easier to get to.

Octomore · 30/07/2022 10:41

Leeds is great for shopping and then we go to The Alchemist for cocktails (none-alcoholic for DS).
There's a retro gaming arcade if you think your teens would enjoy it on the outskirts of Leeds.
www.arcadeclub.co.uk/leeds/
It's near a Vue so you could combine with a cinema trip and there are plenty of good eateries including a fantastic Sicilian takeaway/deli.
Yorkshire Sculpture park is good, but not if it's raining.

I must have missed this.... Chatsworrh isnt even in the north Peak District? It's south peak!

Octomore · 30/07/2022 10:55

Also, a lot of the central Leeds recommendations above might not work with a dog... e.g. Roxy is unlikely to let you in with a dog (at least I've never seen a dog in there), same for most central eateries unless you sit outdoors.

There is a lot of outdoor seating for food up by the Grand Arcade though, some very nice places.
