Are people fixing gas/electric prices?

Legalwomble · 29/07/2022 17:43

I’m on flexible Avro and pay £90 pm, I’ve just asked about fixing and have a price of £188 pm

This is what they are offering. It’s quite a lot higher than I have obviously, but I also will struggle to afford almost £190pm, and I assume they will just put that up some more if I’m using more than expected.

I know a load of people off the Internet can’t decide, I’m just wondering if this is the kinds of prices everyone else is getting and what people are thinking?

I guess I’m just concerned help may appear and I will then be stuck on this tariff??

Are people fixing gas/electric prices?

No.

No.

No you aren’t fixing? Any reason why not? I’m just interested in where people are going with the prices because I’m worried not to fix, but also worried to fix due to being a single parent and having no one else to absorb any of it

We have fixed at 10.297p gas (Standing charge 29.959p) and 33.841p electric (Standing charge 54.007p)

If Octobers rates increase as predicted we will be better off on this over winter. If by some miracle Octobers rate is better we can get out early by paying £75, which is significantly less than our monthly DD.

My prices offered are ridiculous aren’t they??

Because it wasn’t in our interest to fix last time, it was cheaper not to fix.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 29/07/2022 17:55

I would fix on that as standing charge is same as you are paying now, whereas gas/electric usage although more expensive is within your control to lower.

The daily standing charges you get charged regardless of what you use

FatOaf · 29/07/2022 17:56

You'd be paying 60% more per unit of electricity (daytime) and 110% more per unit of gas than you are currently, which is a bigger increase than is expected for the price cap in October. That seems high, but it's difficult to find the price cap inreases broken down into separate figures for electricity and gas.

KangarooKenny · 29/07/2022 17:59

I’ve just had a look at our offers and they want £500 pcm 😱
That’s not telling how much per standing charge etc, just how much they want a month.

Yes, I thought the gas was a bit bloody steep!
mum not sure with Octopus if I can go in after and lower the Direct Debit? I know I can currently because I’m on a flexible tariff, but I’m also £500 in credit (been overpaying for a while) which I could use some of?

I don’t know how anyone is going to afford it. I know mine probably seems a lot less than others, but I’m a single parent with a badly paid job and that £190 is probably as unreachable for me as £400 is for others.
I don’t have another adult here to discuss it with, and I’m really conscious of deciding badly and is being even worse off than we are as that extra will come from something else 😞

I took this fix last year until Nov 23 , I’d never fixed before but I think it was a good move even though I’ve paid slightly over the odds this winter . Top is gas , bottom is electric . I can get out with a £35 charge .
Standard unit rate 4.428p per kWh
Standing charge 30.232p per day*

Standard unit rate 22.763p per kWh
Standing charge 29.517p per day*

MarshaBradyo · 29/07/2022 18:08

Following as we’ve just been offered double as fixed

User639921 · 29/07/2022 18:08

We fixed ours in June as we don't use so much in the summer when we are paying more than price cap and it will be lower than the predicted October price cap for the winter. This was with BG and was emailed to us as a customer and I checked on MSE and a lot of people were doing this fix.

dementedpixie · 29/07/2022 18:09

I'm not fixing as the rates offered are roughly 82% and 111% higher for electricity and gas respectively. I'm staying on the variable rate

Are you worried that it’s going to go up even more and suddenly become really unaffordable?

Im really tempted to stay on the Variable rate, I just can’t stomach £190 pm

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 29/07/2022 18:13

I'm thinking of the variable rate as a short term fix. I'm refuse to pay over the odds right now.

Legalwomble · 29/07/2022 18:15

@dementedpixie thats the thing isn’t it? I budget to within an inch of my life and it feels so wrong to bloody agree to pay over double what I’m paying now

I'm with Octopus too.
They are offering me two fixed deals, £4500 or £4800 for 12 months.
They also have a crystal ball predictor thing on their website which predicts I'll be paying £4200 on my current rate if prices increase in line with expert predictions.
So I'm not fixing.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 29/07/2022 18:22

No we are staying in variable and will pay as we get the bill. I read the meters monthly and work out what we need to put aside. The money is better of in my bank account earning interest rather then in their bank account and then having to fight to get it back.

we use very very little gas and electric.

BeyondMyWits · 29/07/2022 18:24

We fixed back in Feb when our last fix (BG) ended. It seemed sensible at the time as there was talk already starting of huge price increases to come.. Glad we did, fix is til Sept 2023, just takes the edge off the worry.

Dic · 29/07/2022 18:29

We fixed at 4.1 gas and electric 21p. You can get out of the fixed price for £30 with ours so was a no brainier to fix.

My fixed offer is 15.49p/kwh for gas and 50.66p/kwh for electricity!

MarshaBradyo · 29/07/2022 18:44

Currently we’re on 7.919p per kWh for gas

Fixed is Unit rate: 15.752p per kWh

Not sure what to do feels a gamble

dementedpixie · 29/07/2022 18:47

That's 98.9% higher than your current rate and is above the expected price cap increase coming in October

Daisytomhope · 29/07/2022 18:50

No because mine is just coming to the end of its fix and I was offered a 2 year fix that meant direct debit going from £110 to £299. I'm on variable at £170 a month from next month. I didn't think locking in for 2 years at that rate was sensible (may have considered it for 1 year). I'm also a single parent living on disability benefits so understand the not being able to discuss it with any one. I'm worried about the rises but hoping even if it goes up they'll not stay that high for the 2 years so will be better off staying on variable for now overall even if over the winter my bill is more than the £299 a month.
