Cheapest online grocery shop

We don't have Aldi or Lidl nearby within driving distance but trying to cut food shopping costs.

Which supermarket does the cheapest online shop when you consider delivery costs as well?

Thanks Flowers

I find Iceland the cheapest.

Hennie4 · 29/07/2022 11:50

We tried Tesco a week ago, as Ocado had no slots (that would work for us), and it was a good 30% cheaper than our normal weekly shop. Delivery is £3, if you are OK with a 4 hour delivery slot.

Quality not quite as good on a few things, but considering moving to Tesco online going forward.

Orangesandlemons77 · 29/07/2022 11:53

Iceland does free delivery I see, that's good but is a bit limited in fresh things (but maybe good on a way)

Asda for me, £6 a month for any time deliveries. I also like that on the app you can sort out any refunds etc without having to speak to anyone.

Orangesandlemons77 · 29/07/2022 11:54

I used Ocado this weekend and thought it was expensive, only used as it sent me a £20 off code. It did have free delivery.

It depends on specific items I find.
Try filling a basket on Morrisons, Asda, Tesco and sainsburys online of your usual products and see which is best for you.

I do like Iceland’s but can’t do a full shop there so it’s tescos for me

That's a good idea, thanks!

I quite like Iceland but I kept getting issues with salad items arriving half frozen.

Dalint · 29/07/2022 12:02

I go with Tesco now and previously I went with Morrisons. £7.99 per month with Tesco for as many deliveries as you want (each delivery needs to be over £40) in value otherwise there's a surcharge.
Their clubcard prices are really good. You can use your clubcard vouchers for the delivery saver fee. I think if you use them towards the delivery saver, then each £1 clubcard voucher is worth £2 or £3 maybe?
Morrisons are very reliable. Tesco is less reliable.

The reason I use deliveries is because we don't have a car so it's for heavy things. I buy things that I know are cheaper in Lidl and that don't weigh a tonne to carry home!
The reason for changing from Morrisons to Tesco was because Morrisons stopped selling the brand of tobacco I smoke whereas Tesco do.

Morrisons and Tesco are comparably priced, but the clubcard prices in Tesco make them cheaper I think.

Asda for me

Iceland for cheap frozen stuff but they are more expensive for grocery/veg

Dalint · 29/07/2022 12:05

Ocado are astronomically priced but every now and again I do a shop with them (twice a year maybe) when I get a craving for a particular item that only they stock.
Iceland is cheap for frozen food obviously, but the range of items they sell is limited.
Do you subscribe to Amazon Prime? They have a 'fresh' range and they also have a Morrisons range with free delivery over a certain value if you're a Prime member. The items they carry from Morrisons are more expensive through Amazon and the range is limited compared to the actual Morrisons site.

PortalooSunset · 29/07/2022 12:05

There used to be a website (my supermarket maybe?) where you could do an online shop and it would compare prices. Not sure if it's still a thing.
Asda seems pretty good for us. I'd use Iceland if they actually delivered here.
You can get free delivery from Morrison with a MtMorrion card if you work for the NHS.

PortalooSunset · 29/07/2022 12:06

Wtf? My Morrison card..

Dalint · 29/07/2022 12:07

The price of everything though is going through the roof. Things are not jumping from £1 to £1.05. They're jumping from £1 to £1.50!!!!!!!!!! Gah!

Dalint · 29/07/2022 12:08

Tesco also do an extensive cheap range. Quality isn't the best, but needs must!

See, I tried moving my Ocado to Tesco like for like. A standard £120 shop dropped to £118. Decided it wasn’t worth the hassle as the app was harder to use and the slots weren’t as good.

done the same with Morrison’s and it was more expensive!

2u2me2me2u · 29/07/2022 12:17

We are lucky to have Lidl and Aldi nearby but I don't like their fruit and Veg so we got to Asda or Tesco. Last week I decided to try Morrisons for a change, got part way round with quite a few things in my trolley and found the prices were ridiculous, Lurpak for instance £1.50 dearer than iceland, Peppers 50p more per pack, I was walking round comparing everything and annoying myself so I gave up and went to Asda.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/07/2022 12:18

I've seen a few reports saying Morrisons has got a lot more expensive.

Unless you're looking to pay for a delivery pass, you don't have to stick with the same one each time. If you swap and change you can cherry pick offers and things that are cheaper or you like more and then stock up and rotate round.

Added advantage that if you miss a few weeks, you sometimes get 'come back to us' money off vouchers

Orangesandlemons77 · 29/07/2022 12:34

I actually found Waitrose cheaper than Ocado- used their essentials range for example 6 eggs are £1 compared to £1.40 for Ocado.

That reminds me of this meme. I'm going to attempt to attach the image.

Iceland regularly have good deals or money off, so one option might be use Iceland when this is the case. That way you get the good deals/money off with Iceland when they're around, but can top on other goods they don't supply with another store when you order. Most shops offer a cheaper delivery price if you receive goods later in the evening. Might only be £1/2 cheaper but all adds up.

Yes, I have just checked online and there are some money off codes and also they do next day free delivery. Might get say a monthly shop with them to fill the freezer and then use another one for more fresh stuff perhaps. Thanks

I actually find sainsburys really reasonable despite its reputation. Delivery slots are as little as £1 for the saver slots (choose a day and 3 hour window and they confirm an hour slot the morning of the delivery). They do have an aldi price match section- fruit and veg is very reasonably priced (search for the imperfect range) and decent quality. Search Mary Jane for dairy, JJames for meat and eggs, and they do some other bits that are good. Their offers are alright as well.
