Surely a nosebleed on one side can't be sinister?!

V random, I know.

I've had about 5-6 nosebleeds in the past couple of weeks.

They've been irritating, because they're pretty much out of the blue, relatively full on, as in, I need to remove myself, use lots of tissues, and they take 20 minutes or so to resolve, and once I had to change my clothes because it got on there before I could get it sorted.

ANYWAY! I was late into a meeting because of one today, and when I mentioned it in passing, my friend/ colleague really quizzed me on it, and then freaked out. She said it could be a sign there was something really wrong, such as leukaemia?!

I assume, as it was just one side, and not requiring medical help, I probably have a something that just needs to heal.. that maybe I sneezed too much or it's the antihistamines?!

I'd appreciate it if someone could send me soothing "tosh and nonsense" type comments so I can get back to sleepGrin

My son gets nosebleeds due to hayfever
Tis the season

lborgia · 29/07/2022 05:49

And so they take a while to sort out?

I don't take antihistamines for hayfever, but when I had it as a kid I just got 5 minute nosebleeds.

Maybe it's my menopausal thin skin!

I always thought that one side was ok but 2 sides meant something more serious?

For me its dry air - hot or cold.
I've just had about 10 days of nosebleeds, 4-5 a day, taking 10-20 mins to resolve, needing lots of kitchen roll as tissues were useless.

Not a medic, but a long time nosebleed sufferer. Almost always only get them one side and in spates, as I think something may weaken a blood vessel. Often change in humidity or temp or mild illness can cause it for me.

Are you pinching the right part of your nose? You need to pinch the fleshy nostrils, not the bridge of your nose (that’s a common misconception).

I was getting nosebleeds that lasted over 30 mins so I was sent to ENT - the Dr said he could see what was happening, it was something like having a scab, the options were to either leave it as it was healing or he could break it and cauterize my nostril.

I opted to leave it.

You do need to see a Dr but don't worry about it, it could be many things it could be none.

blackteaplease · 29/07/2022 06:28

At my first aid training they said if it lasts more than 30 mins get it checked out. But if you are worried you could ask your gp

Zapx · 29/07/2022 06:46

Used to have bad nosebleeds almost daily before I had the op to fix it. I think I may have had it from both sides maybe ONCE out of hundreds?! Always on one side for me! Had the op done and never looked back

lborgia · 29/07/2022 06:47

Nope, all good, thanks everyone, I agree that more than half an hour and/or both nostrils, I'd get it checked. Ta!

Unless you are Eleven from Stranger Things - I doubt your one sided nosebleeds are indications of anything super-normal :)

Clevs · 29/07/2022 06:55

It can also be a sign of high blood pressure.

Romeiswheretheheartis · 29/07/2022 07:40

I was thinking about going to the GP about this too - I've been getting them on one side for a while now. They only last about 5-10 minutes though. Definitely not high blood pressure for me, mines really low.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 29/07/2022 08:05

Another nosebleed sufferer here. Like @Wildernesstips, changes in humidity seem to be a trigger for me (you used to be able to almost guarantee if I got one there would be a thunderstorm soon after) but they're less frequent now. DD1 has inherited the same tendency though and we both have low blood pressure. I remember asking the GP about it after the nursery freaked out after she had a spectacular nosebleed one day and insisted I should get her checked out (like your colleague) but and GP pretty much shrugged and said it was just one of those things.

Mysaucepanbroke · 29/07/2022 08:08

I’m a nosebleeder. Mine are linked to migraines but every time I’ve mentioned them to my neurologist he’s told me nosebleeds aren’t that serious! (sometimes they’re very heavy and I have iron deficiency anaemia)

bert3400 · 29/07/2022 08:12

My son gets them due to the aircon being on (we live overseas) . I guess its the change in dry/humid air. He often gets them after flying as well. I would see if they continue into the winter but it's more than likely to be Aircon

HippyChickMama · 29/07/2022 08:37

Dh and ds are both prone to nosebleeds, they are both prolific sneezers too due to multiple allergies. If ds forgets to take his antihistamine for a day we can pretty much guarantee a nosebleed during the night. It's just irritation of the mucous membranes for him and is often only one side
