Teenagers and sleep

If you’ve got a 14/15 year old and it’s the holidays, how long would your DC sleep for without you wakening them? A little concerned about how long my DS is sleeping but can’t remember how long I slept for at that age.

I would sleep until after midday sometimes at that age.

14+ hours at times.

I remember at 15 I once slept 11pm-3pm.

I used to be up at 7 as a teenager, so was very surprised to discover that not all teenagers are like this. My older ones are now 'normal' in their sleeping patterns, but the youngest generally sleeps until 3PM.

I wake my 15 year old at 12pm as think that's late enough for a lie in - think he might sleep until late afternoon if I let him (he goes to bed around 11pm)

I wouldn't wake them but neither would I let them stay up all night on their phone / watching crap or playing games. Teenagers need sleep and their body clock makes them want to sleep later.

All day if they want. I was the same at their age (mine are 15 and 17). I only wake them if they had work (they set alarms for that themselves though) or we had a day out planned.

sometimes they don't emerge until 1-2pm

Mine get woken at 10.30am absolute latest. 16&14.

I let my DD sleep until she wakes (and just enjoy the peace and quiet in the meantime 😁). The rate of change in teenage bodies and brains is absolutely astonishing and I think they need almost as much sleep as newborns. Plus, their body clock is shifted, meaning that they naturally go to sleep and wake later.

i'm at work so god knows when she gets up.
wifi goes off at 23.00 though, and i do prefer her to be turning in by midnight.

I have 3 teens who can't understand how anyone could lie around in bed that long. They get up when they feel like it in the main but it's rare for anyone of them to be in bed after 9am. They have stuff to do. My dd had showered, had breakfast, done an hour of study and read a chapter of her book before her friend got up and sent her good morning message at 11.30 - but then they don't stay up half the night (in bed by 9.30 school time / 10.30 holidays).

My youngest is 15 and although bedtime is 11pm on a school night, he's allowed to suit himself during holidays - within reason.

I think he's going to sleep at about 12.30- 1am as he's usually awake by 10am. If he isn't, I will go in by 11am.

I don't mind late nights but I don't want him turning nocturnal and sleeping the entire day away. Not in a controlling way, just in a 'he's 15, not 18 and right now, he still needs a touch of parenting!'

I leave them to it to be honest - both DD17 and DS15 have part time jobs for the summer so 3 days a week they have to get up early and the others they can do as they please. I'm at work anyway and I don't police what time they go to bed. Both have some online friends overseas so holidays are an opportunity for them to play online games with them.

I let DD 17 sleep as long as she wants. Typically at the minute she’s waking around 11am but around 14/15 it wasn’t unusual for her to wake at 2pm in the holidays! I don’t see the point in needlessly waking her up if we don’t have anything specific to do

Mine are 14 and 15 but both have summer jobs so are up about 9. But on the days they're not working they generally surface at about 11 ish.

Two teen boys here - 13 & 18

During the holidays we let the 13 year old stay up until we go to bed (11/11.30pm). He would then comfortably sleep for 12 hours, if not longer. We don't wake him, he doesn't sleep well during term time - a lot of school anxiety unfortunately- so we like him to recharge his batteries during the holidays.

18 year old's sleep pattern is much more all over the place but sometimes he's not home from work until the early hours, or has been out at a club. Again we leave him to sleep (but he is an adult so we should!)
