Will there be power cuts or energy rationing in autumn winter?

A friend mentioned this is likely. Is it and how do I prep.

Have a gas hob and a log fire, bought an power bank for devices (phone) but not sure what this actually means and will it happen? How do I prep?

I'm thinking like the winter of discontent? Before I was born so not really sure what is going to happen ir if I have got mixed up.

I'm putting and other £100 aside for energy bills. This time last year it was £66 a month now it £115. Sure it's will go up again.

I love that people are moving to log burners. I want more cancer chances in my life.

Same people will be buying electric cars to save the planet!

I'm in Finland and they're saying now that two hour blackouts are a possibility, though last resort. I think it'll be a case of different areas getting blackouts on different days, not everyone getting a two hour blackout at the same time.

With this, and losing our good electricity contract because the company has gone under, we're looking into getting a, don't know what to call it in English, but a kind of fireplace that reserves and radiates heat for hours after the fire has burnt out. Potentially one that has the baking oven in it too. Because otherwise we won't be able to afford to heat our home, blackouts or not. And solar panels too.

So what do you suggest instead? You want to people to freeze so we avoid a minisculely increased risk of getting cancer?

Well actually for us burning wood is environmentally sensible. In fact our whole house used to be wood fired and we had a biomass eco grant for it. We have our own sustainable woodland and use trees which fall naturally and so there is no carbon cost in transportation or processing. So actually for us we will continue to feel that we are doing our bit thanks. That combined with the solar panels and the fact that we would otherwise have to heat using oil means we are quite happy with our contribution.

Not unless this government wants a revolution/riots...

Can you imagine the chaos if we can't keep your food in the fridge (what would supermarkets do?), keep ourself warm, especially for those who have disabilities and health conditions.

If that happens I will personally march on Parliament to access their many bars and restaurants (funded by the tax-payer...) which I am sure won't be affected by any cuts...

You might be able to use a fireplace if you are in the countryside but in places like London where many people just live in flats and can't really do much to mitigate, no electricity/gas/water for long period of time would be an absolute disaster.

Unlikely for domestic customers. On the upside if it did happen that’s the end for the Tory government.
Highly likely in industry, particularly those with high energy needs which would be moved on to three or four day weeks.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 30/07/2022 16:31

I think it’s very likely for domestic customers. This government don’t give a shit about its citizens.

Blossomtoes · 30/07/2022 16:34

It was all customers in the 70s.

Yes I think we will. Already happening in Germany, no hot water in public buildings. As with covid, most other European countries are light years ahead of us in planning for the worst...

Ahead? You're joking right!?

Germany is in deep shit because it decided to massively rely on Russia for gas and oil, even though they were warned it would be a disaster. Now they are for ing rationing on other member states to bail them out.

They signed the deal for Nordstream 2 at the time that Russia last attacked Ukraine, so their gas supplies wouldn't be inconvenienced if Russia attached Ukraine again!

Germany's over reliance on Russia for energy is pretty much at the root of most of today's energy problems, it's given Putin a really strong position in his illegal war against Ukraine, and you're praising them for their foresight!! Incredible.

Yes praising them for being ahead is an odd one

MarshaBradyo · 30/07/2022 18:31

If the U.K. was rationing already and Germany not I don’t think that poster would say we were ‘getting ahead’

cakeorwine · 30/07/2022 19:28

I think there is a lot that can be done now - small changes that business and people can make - which individually don't impact - but they do make a bigger impact collectively on our energy usage.

But I don't see much action from Government on that.

Modern Ecodesign woodburners (higher than Defra) don't give you cancer, quality of fuel accepted.

We traded with the Soviets right through the cold war.

We also went into the International Space Station with Russia

Your just being wise after the event...

AndreaC74 · 30/07/2022 19:41

...and Germany is NOT rationing, its asked states to look at ways to save Gas and they are doing that, nothing in law.

cherrypiepie · 30/07/2022 20:09

I could cope with two hour planned pier outages if this is what needs to happen. Just need to be prepared.

Have bought a power bank for dd hearing aids that charge from mains, so as long as we have some electric she should cope.

I think many people have forgotten how drying central heating is in a home. Having lived as an adult in a country where central heating is not routine, you quickly learn to air the contents of cupboards on sunny days, otherwise moudly shoes etc. The reality of using a log burner as a heating source is very different to having a nice log fire when you fancy a cosy evening-it's a right pain stacking cubic metres of firewood and mastering the art of loading it before you go to bed so that you have embers and not a cold start in the morning, when your bedroom might only be 8 degrees c.

I love that little thermostat on the wall.
