Me!
But only The Belgariad and The Mallorian. Tried to read some of his others but just didn't love them in the same way.

GrouchyKiwi · 01/08/2022 12:47

We've recently bought them all so my 10-year-old can start reading them. I'm planning a cosy reread over Winter. Grin

I also made DH buy me all the Alanna & Immortals books by Tamora Pierce. They are so lovely.

Fantasy books in the 80s and 90s were marvellous. They're all too grimdark these days.

ponygirlcurtis · 01/08/2022 12:50

@Bowednotbroken I felt the same about Piers Antony, felt quite uncomfortable with a couple of ideas in his books even as a naive teen.

@ForfuckssakeEXHstopbeingatwat me too on the Dragonlance Chronicles! Loved Raislin, and Tas (of course). Loved the covers too and all the detailed artwork, have a book on the artwork somewhere. I can see my yellowing copies from where I am sitting.

I have started rereading Pawn of Prophecy. Just reading and remembering all the people and place names again has really taken me back. Between that and the Neighbours finale I am on a right 80s nostalgia trip this week! 😂

ponygirlcurtis · 01/08/2022 12:52

@GrouchyKiwi ooo I loved the Alanna books too, reread them multiple times. I don't own copies but maybe I will review that once I have reread the Belgariad.

The Tamora Pierce books are such a vital part of my teen journey! Though I love Keladry and Daine as much as Alanna.

Also a huge Eddings fan. Thoug I've only read Belgariad and Mallorean series (with the Polgara and Belgarath autobiographies too) I know they aren't perfect and have a few issues, but the essence of the story is great and I loved the world and it's charatcers and feel I know it as well as my own!

RedRec · 01/08/2022 13:01

Never heard of him but just googled him and found that he and his wife were jailed for child abuse in the 70s. So that's a big fat no from me re reading his books.

turkeyboots · 01/08/2022 13:03

I loved them as a teen, the Sparhawk series was my favourite. I got annoyed the repetition of plot in the Belgarian series's although it was supposed to be intensional.

turkeyboots · 01/08/2022 13:07

Wow, just read about the abuse conviction. Wonder why that isn't more widely known?

DorotheaDiamond · 01/08/2022 13:17

Me (but never knew about the child abuse :-()

cant go back to piers Anthony - way too pervy (like later heinlein) - no idea how I missed it as a teen!

love love love the dragon lance twins saga - I always cry at the end!

try Raymond feist (magician) then janny wurts (empire series) for things I love as much! Also Mercedes’ lackey magics pawn series!

DuneFan · 01/08/2022 13:21

I liked these too in my teens although they were always the lightest of fantasy, not brilliantly written or plotted but a nice easy read. The teenage protagonist was probably a big draw even though Garion was pretty irritating. I've kept them for my kids but i am not that likely to re read myself.

Better at standing the test of time has been Dune (that teenage protagonist again!), wheel of time, Robin Hobb of course, Robin McKinley. I think if I was was same age now I'd enjoy Patrick Rothfuss although I haven't read book 3 (if it's even been published yet?)

Has anyone read High Hunt? I was definitely too young for that, it's very dark.

Triffid1 · 01/08/2022 14:17

Patricia Briggs Mercy Thompson series is urban fantasy but Eddings' fans might enjoy them.

TinselAngel · 01/08/2022 14:21

Reporting for duty! Love The Belgariad and Mallorean, they're my comfort reading and have been since I was a teenager. I re-read them every couple of years.

I have a habit (as when I made the comment that I think provoked the thread) of making Eddings references, to the bafflement of all around me.

I also like the Sparhawk books. The rest of his stuff less so.

I found out about the crimes a couple of years ago, and as he's dead, and I'm not giving him any extra money I try not to let it ruin the wonderful escapism that I love so much.

TinselAngel · 01/08/2022 14:29

Jammydodged · 28/07/2022 14:01

Love these books, any recommendations for similar style series?

Have you read the Sparhawk ones?

Me! I used to save up my pocket money so I could buy the next in series, then read them so many times they’re nearly falling apart. Not sure whether to replace or not 🤔 can’t see an edition I like enough to spend the £ (Ideally I’d like some cool hardcovers with gold lettering like some of the Harry Potter special editions.)

Favourite was the Belgariad, with Garion coming into his powers and messing up as he experimented. Ce’ Nedra was fun too. I wasn’t quite as keen on Mallorean as I felt it never fully unpacked the horror of the baby abduction, would have preferred the book without that random tragedy.

Loved Sparhawk too, especially the chats he had with Blue Rose. I particularly liked that in an early conversation Blue Rose says “I will harden your heart and strengthen your arm” and later Sparkhawk becomes a bit more emotionally distant and cold but we’re left to work out for ourselves that it’s because of the influence of the Blue Rose…

Favourite line was when Belgarath admits he’s late and injured because a tree fell on him. Yep random crap happens even to super powerful immortal sorcerors…

Grim Oak Press are reprinting them in limited edition hardbacks but they are £££

Purpleavocado · 01/08/2022 14:34

I loved them as a teen. I found out about the child abuse a few years ago, and haven't wanted to ever touch their books again. I think they kept an adopted child chained up.

ihavespoken · 01/08/2022 15:19

ohh I read these as a very early teen as my VERY COOL aunt (who's only about 8 years older than me had them). I am off to get them on kindle for my hols - thanks OP!

ihavespoken · 01/08/2022 15:20

brackets fail due to excitement Grin
