Do you have a good small android phone?

I need to replace my phone as it's getting more & more unreliable. I didn't think my list of requirements were that challenging, but it seems like mid-range phones have just got really massive & chunky.

Looking for: not super pricey (up to say £350 I guess), main thing is a decent camera that will take good photos outdoors in bright conditions (I use instagram a lot for work), ideally a headphone socket, and a reliable non-flakey fingerprint scanner.

My current phone is 140mm x 70mm and 180g which feels pretty large to carry around all the time already, so ideally smaller would be good. I'm sure I'm being crap & the perfect phone is out there, but I'd love any recommendations :) :)

I have a Samsung Galaxy A40 which is about the size you cite above. I didn't want anything bigger. I'm happy with it - the camera much better than my previous Samsung. However, I've had it a couple of years now so there may be something better.

I always use Motorola phones, they do everything I want them too and last forever, I really like the gorilla glass too as I always drop phones!

I found the Huawei p20 lite a very good phone. Ticks all the boxes you've listed. It's compatible with Google too, as I know models after stopped being.

I ended up with a google pixel 4a, as later models were just too big. Motorola we’re always my choice, but again too big to use one handed these days. The 4a was cheaper, as new models are out, and it’s great so far!

SquigglePigs · 28/07/2022 11:42

I've got the Pixel 4a and I love it. It's a nice size phone. The camera quality is really good too.

This is so helpful, thank you. Those with the Pixel 4a, how do you find the battery life? A colleague has one & says it's not so good? (but I don't know what phone she had before)

I tend to charge mine daily. It’s fine, but I have Bluetooth for my car and Fitbit, so I think that eats into the battery charge.

Dinoteeth · 28/07/2022 11:55

Can you still get the 4a?

The lack of small androids is ridiculous, esp at the lower end of the budget.

I replaced my A40 with the S22 only because of the lack of budget small phones. Bit of me wishes swapping to Apple would be easy the Apple mini looks great but everything else we have is Android.

Agree Dino - my dad has recently bought an iphone SE which is perfect size, great camera, tbh I could probably even run to the cost though it's more than I want to pay, but I really don't want to have to move over to new OS

I've got a pixel 4a and the battery life is fine. It needs charging daily but they all do now. It does everything I want it to, and it was the smallest phone I could find.

Sadik · 28/07/2022 12:08

Really happy to charge daily - I use my phone pretty hard, so I just want it definitely to do a full day at work.

I guess they're effectively small portable computers, it's kind of fair enough they need charging daily

Look at OnePlus. They are an odd, little known but, imo, brilliant android phone.

I'm on the 7T having spent 4 years running my business, lots of photos, on a OnePlus2.

Have a look at reviews, see what you think.

MothBat · 28/07/2022 12:46

I have Samsung A41 for size but no longer available. Xiaomi 11 lite and Sony Xperia 10 III/IV are smaller than most or new Pixel 6a but haven't checked reviews.

Sadik · 28/07/2022 13:10

I'll have a look at both of those too :)
