We have a dog locally who "takes himself for a walk"

He lives in a house that backs onto a park and is often out wandering.

Quite often there are reports on the local FB of a lost dog and someone will always pop up to say "don't worry, that's "Rover" he'll find his way home".

But the safety of the dog isn't the only thing to worry about? Surely any unsupervised dog can be a risk e.g to small children and if nothing else, no one's picking up his mess.

I didn't think dogs were allowed to roam, but no one (on FB) seems to think this is an issue. He's just a cute local celebrity.

Shouldn't this be reported somewhere or am I being too up tight?

Any dog can attack or be attacked. Be hit by a car etc
dogs must be under control

Camalia · 28/07/2022 08:49

We’ve got one too.

Its constantly “found” by other dog walkers and posted all over Facebook

Owner is a 90 year old Russian dude who just posts on FB in all caps LET HIM OUT

Its hilarious.

All the village kids know the dog. It’s the most docile thing you’ve ever seen

Mollymalone123 · 28/07/2022 08:50

Unless the dog can also pick up his own poop as well then it’s not right. It was like this back in the 70’s when people let dogs roam. There a risk to the dog if either being run over or stolen.I would report to dog warden-they won’t pass in your name-they might just pop round and have a word with them. Also for people that are scared of dogs it would be very scary with no owner in sight and a wandering dog.

Camalia · 28/07/2022 08:51

Seems like most dog owners can’t pick up their own shit, I can’t get worked up about one lone dog crapping once or twice a day

Wolfiefan · 28/07/2022 08:52

It’s not funny. It’s completely irresponsible and not legal. Dogs must be under control in public and picked up after.

No, I don't know dogs, but it's not small. Labrador size.

Probably identifies as a cat.

There's someone in our village who posts at least once a week that her dogs have escaped from her garden that isn't remotely secure Hmm they're often found miles away and the youngest one is a very enthusiastic entire large breed male who terrorises any female dogs (including mine) if you come across it on a walk. Having to walk 2 miles home carrying a trembling 22kg sprocker isn't my idea of fun. I've reported it to the local Police (we don't have a dog warden covering the area) and the RSPCA. She thinks it's funny..... and it really isn't.

Longdistance · 28/07/2022 09:26

In my mums area where she lives, there are several lazy dog owners who let their dogs roam about outside. Always on fb with people moaning about these dogs that escaped. One owner has two Pomeranians that saunter off and are constantly being taken back to the back gate and the other owner has an Akita (if all dogs to let loose).
I don’t know why the people who live nearby don’t report the owners, they’re clearly useless.

Most owners do pick up after their dog, actually.

But yeah the dog shouldn't be out without a 2 legged to keep it under control and clean up after it.

Take the dog to the vet and say it's a stray that needs neutering? Is there an equivalent of "the pound" in the UK? Where I grew up lost dogs were taken to the pound by the police.

BlanketsBanned · 28/07/2022 10:16

Dogs have to be kept under control, you can report this to the dog warden at your local Council.

NiceTwin · 28/07/2022 10:21

Do you live on East Lancs?
There is one in a village near me who opens the door and lets himself out.
He makes his way to the park 😂and if someone doesn't walk him home, he makes his way home when he is ready.

I'd stop carrying it home if I were you. You're just enabling the idiot.

As a new dog owner, I hate idiots like this (her, not you).

troppibambini6 · 28/07/2022 10:43

@HandbagsnGladrags I think she carries her own trembling dog home not the roaming one.

It's really bloody irresponsible.

Ha! We must be neighbours. 😁

Annonnimoouse42 · 28/07/2022 11:57

our corgi used to take herself around town to visit Mum's friends during the day and be back home for when we got out of school. This was the '70s though.
She would sometimes catch a lift home with the dog warden, who knew her and where she lived.

SirenSays · 28/07/2022 12:05

My nana had two Jack Russell's. A lazy one who would walk himself to the top of the street and back. And an adventurous one who would take himself into town and all over the place.

Jack Russells are so cheeky, I was parked outside our local coop the other day and saw one escape out a garden and run into the shop 😂😂
