I packed a carrier bag with a mixture of treats and small useful things as people have suggested and gave it as a surprise present including a dvd( it was a long time ago!) chocolate £20 note condoms first aid kit and sewing kit. I also bought them all an ikea tool kit they have all used them and no one else had as much as a screwdriver

Thekormachameleon · 26/07/2022 21:32

Thank you, this is really helpful

Don't send too much stuff. I sent mine with our old plates, bowls - just two of each. Mugs are a deffo and two spoons, forks, etc. set of bedding and a change. Fan.

Them getting stuff is half of the fun for them.

Deffo under bed boxes - rooms are small.

Positivelypatient · 26/07/2022 22:19

For my first two DDs I bought them a wok style non stick pan instead of loads of saucepans, pretty much does all the jobs in one.

RomainingCalm · 26/07/2022 22:30

If they are likely to go visiting friends in other towns/cities (or come home) a small overnight bag or rucksack is useful - when you move in you tend to have the biggest possible holdalls and cases that aren't great for a long weekend away!

Palamon · 26/07/2022 22:35

My son would say get cutlery that looks different to everyone else’s.

the best mattress protector you can buy.

a really decent frying pan and knife (my kids like to cook).

not essential but magnets or pinboard pins/blue tac. An Instax camera so they can have lots of photos on their board.

again, not essential, but a nutribullet.

Chopping boards
Collender for the inevitable pasta.
can opener

Potcallingkettle · 26/07/2022 23:17

Lockable plastic box for the fridge. Hopefully he won’t need it but a boon if you have a flat who help themselves to food.
Bike and bike lock.

This book is v helpful: www.amazon.co.uk/Starting-University-Prepare-Essential-Student/dp/1916102727

Thekormachameleon · 27/07/2022 00:06

Thank you all.
He has his own self contained apartment so no one to share with so will need all of his own equipment

Some of these ideas are great but my advice is to cherry pick the most immediately important, because otherwise you'll have a hell of a lot of stuff to pack.

Then once he's settled in, ask him to send you an Amazon list of things he's found out he really needs. That way you can have it delivered straight to him really quickly.

TeapotTitties · 27/07/2022 00:19

Oh and once he sends you the Amazon list, ignore it and try to get as much stuff from Wilko's online as you can.

Much, much cheaper 😁

Vargas · 27/07/2022 00:21

IKEA bags and a nutribullet if you're my ds. Plus photos/posters for the wall.

DD would disagree with this. She has been living with three people who only bought one or two of everything and pissed of the rest of the house by constantly using everyone else's stuff because theirs was in the dishwasher or they couldn't be bothered to clean it. So I'd say only go minimal if your DC likes washing up!

Hawkins001 · 27/07/2022 00:41

Which university and what's the course op, out of intrigue. @Thekormachameleon

MrsEricBana · 27/07/2022 00:44

Coat hangers!

Theimpossiblegirl · 27/07/2022 00:45

DDs halls were all induction hobs so special pans were needed.

quietnightmare · 27/07/2022 00:56
