Elective C Section - timings, chance of getting bumped?

Hi, I’ll be having an ELCS soon. I’ve been told the hospital books up to 3 ELCSs a day and uses the same theatre as the EMCSs. I’m very low risk and have no particular factors so assume I’ll be the last one in on the day.

I was just wondering if you had an ELCS what your timings were (particularly if you were so low risk) and if you got bumped to the next day?

TIA

I was put off until the next day. Evening actually

DeepSeededUrbanDecay · 26/07/2022 12:04

I had mine at 20mins after midnight on a sunday. Didn't have any emergencies come in luckily.

I’ve never heard of an elective section being done at midnight on a weekend

Because it was so delayed from the day? I didn’t realise they did electives at a weekend?

The pregnancy where I was low risk, I was asked to go in at 7am and the baby was born at midday (I was taken down to theatre at about 11.30am).
The pregnancy where I was higher risk, I went in for 7am and he was born at 9am - taken down at 8.30am!
In my trust, they do electives Monday - Friday until 5pm. If it gets to 5pm and you've not gone down, they ask you to come back the following day but apparently that's rare. One consultant told me they also try not to book electives on a Friday as this is the 'catch up' day for all the postponed ones from the week but obviously all hospitals are different.

Suprima · 26/07/2022 12:22

Depends completely on your hospital.

mine had an emergency theatre and team, and a scheduled theatre and team.

I was told to come in at 7:30 on x day two weeks before my section, I came in at that time on that day and had my baby. Unless there was an overwhelming amount of EMCS, all scheduled ones went ahead as per usual.

CerseiForTheWin · 26/07/2022 12:51

There is honestly no way anyone else is going to be able predict what time your hospital might do your c section. It depends on so many factors.

for what it’s worth, I was in at 9, baby born at 3:30. Breech but otherwise low risk. Got bumped down the list because of emergencies.

I was very hungry.

FTMFML · 26/07/2022 12:54

ELCS, booked for first thing 9am
In at 915am due to doc running late.
Low risk.
However agree with others that is can be so uncertain, if an emergency has to use the elective theatre then unfortunately whether you a high risk or low risk the emergency will take precedence.

Have a lovely time though OP, my ELCS was great!

I’m not really asking anyone to predict when I might go in, just asking for others experiences

They called me a few days before and moved me to the next day after my initial date. Because I'd technically already been bumped, I was first in.

KellynchHall · 26/07/2022 13:00

Both my electives were first thing but I think they had a surgical team who just did the electives.

ScarlettOHaraHamiltonKennedyButler · 26/07/2022 13:01

I've had two and had both on time as planned. I was first on the list with my DS and taken bang on time then second on the list with my DD but was taken first as the woman who had been scheduled first had gone into labour and had an emergency csection the night before (she was still there and told me thats how I know btw the midwives weren't giving me someones info!)

Littlegoth · 26/07/2022 13:04

I was high risk due to APS, and had gestational diabetes so they wanted to do me as soon as possible. I was asked to go for 6:45 am. There was one person before me, then an emergency and I went down at 11 (done by 12). There were another 4 people after me and 2 were bumped.

Franca123 · 26/07/2022 13:07

I was low risk too. I had to get to the hospital at the crack of dawn but was last on the list and would have got bumped for any emergencies. But I got in about midday. My biggest gripe was sitting on a normal chair in the waiting room for bloody hours and only allowing sips of water. Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things! I loved my c section.

MrDuplicity · 26/07/2022 13:11

I had to be there for 7am. There were three of us waiting, and I eventually went down at 3pm, having been told we’d be down before lunch.

There was a team just doing the electives, but the first woman who went down had some complications, and then there was an issue with some equipment in theatre which delayed everything.

siaa · 26/07/2022 13:16

Just to jump on this thread, I also have an elective c sec booked for 2 weeks time after my first baby was born via emergency c sec 2 years ago.

I'm very excited but terrified about the epidural - last time I was in so much pain I wasn't even paying attention to it happening but this time I'll be fully aware! Any tips to calm down Blush

LemonSwan · 26/07/2022 13:21

I was bumped to the next day. Very nice actually. It was a little dry run off the nerves and what to expect. Very nervous first day. Felt very calm the second.

Also nice as no matter how organised you are the day before c you are still running around organising and squaring everything away and setting up.

It was nice to come home and have one last evening with dp as just a two, with nothing to do. We had a nice meal and watched television and had a cuddle.

Was really lovely.

22 years ago now but I had my youngest by ELCS. Got told to be at hospital by 7am on the Thursday but couldn't find childcare for the older 2 so had to drop them at nursery at 8am then go to hospital. I was in a state (didn't want C Section, wanted a natural birth) but got taken down for epidural etc fairly quickly. Had a student putting epidural in who tried 4 times, i could feel the needle moving around in my back, then all the lights went out after a power cut. Generators kicked in after a few seconds but they decided to reschedule me to Friday as I wasn't an emergency and they didn't want the power to go again mid surgery- I still think someone was looking out for me that day as I was SO upset! Back on the ward I got changed and nurse/midwife very bitchily said 'If you'd been here on time you would have had your baby by now" - more tears from me!

Next morning got childcare and got to hospital at 7am. Consultant anaesthetist was horrified when he saw the state of my back after the previous day and did my epidural himself. Baby born 0842hrs!

I still don't know why I didn't want my baby born on a Thursday - everything was fine in the end and she's now a strong, considerate, thoughtful and beautiful young woman.

ShirleyPhallus · 26/07/2022 13:44

Really lovely to hear some positive stories! I think the hunger / thirst / not knowing will be the worst bit

We had to arrive for around 7am for a planned ELCS first thing. On the day we were told there was a reasonable chance of being bumped with my twins, as there was only one neonatal unit space available. In the end they just pushed me back to last on the list instead of first and then we were able to go ahead. Just meant the babies were able to cook for a few more hours and I just had to take regular sips of glucose to manage the gestational diabetes. It was all fine, just a bit surreal waiting around after having to arrive at the hospital so early for them to be born late afternoon. I took a fairly laidback approach and just went along with it, but think my OH found it worse than I did.

@siaa I don’t remember the epidural being too bad, but I think just nice deep breaths and talking to partner/anaesthetic team helped with keeping calm.

Awrite · 26/07/2022 13:52

No 1: told to come in at 8.30am. Baby born at 4.16pm. I was hungry and getting quite emotional.

No 2: told to come in first thing and that I was scheduled for the second section of the day. However, there was an issue with the first and so we were bumped up to the first slot.

Different hospitals.

Hugasauras · 26/07/2022 13:53

We were told to go in at11am, baby born 5.30pm

Kfjsjdbd · 26/07/2022 13:54

I was low risk and last in the day with my first, I had her at about 2pm.

namechangeanonymous · 26/07/2022 13:55

Low risk here we were bumped from Friday to Monday due to staffing and emergencies coming in she decided otherwise and they got me in for an emergency c section without any trouble when I went into labour.

chubbachub · 26/07/2022 13:56

I was third and due to go down at 11. The 7am lady had been and given birth, then the 9am lady's covid test that had been done a few days before had been lost so she had to repeat the test and I got bumped up to 9am. I think once the order is set then that is generally how it goes.

My other elective section I was told I was third and I indeed was third. Ds born at 11.22.

Good luck & congrats x
