If you WFH FT and have grown-up kids (or no kids) what time do you get up?

Just that, really. Understandably, people with small children must get up at a certain time because of breakfast, school runs, etc. But if you work from home, and don't need to attend to your children in the morning (or have none), what time do you get up? My alarm goes off at 8:00am and I'm at my desk for 900am. Just curious as to what time others with a similar set up, get up and start working. I usually finish around 6:30pm / 7:00pm.

DH gets up around 6.30 and has a leisurely breakfast and catch up with some online news, games etc. He is at his desk by 7.30. I can’t WFH and leave the house between 7.15 and 7.30. During the school holidays I TRY to lie in but always feel bad and get up around 8.

When I was young I could have won a medal for lying in. Loved being in bed till noon or 1pm. Now (I'm much older) I finally have the freedom that I could, I have lost the ability 🙁It's natures cruel joke! I'm now in the pattern where I'm awake at 6 or earlier and knackered by 9pm.

So, to answer your question, I get work out of the way early. Today I started at 7, finished at 1. I usually clock up a few hours at the weekend too as am single, not much of a social life. Bit sad really! But it means that weekdays I rarely work in the afternoon. I like having that free time. Sometimes I'll go out, or do my hobbies, spend time in the garden, occasionally nap 🙂For me personally it's worth giving up a bit of free time at the weekend to have lots of time off in the week. I wouldn't want to go back to Mon-Fri 9-5. It's so restrictive.

My alarm goes off at 6.30, I get up and feed the dog and let him out in the garden, then make a coffee and go back to bed, catch up on the news, social media, etc.

I get up properly at 7.30. Normally start work between 8.30 and 9.

In theory I can choose my own hours, however having worked a pattern where I am available 8-6 for many years' it is expected of me. Having said that if I don't have my camera on nobody knows if I am in bed, or dressed and ready to present (or somewhere in between). DH leaves for work around 7 when he is working in the office and as he gets up it slowly wakes me, I then shower and put a load of washing on or similar before making my coffee and logging on at 8.
If he is away or I am overtired I will not set an alarm, I then usually wake naturally between 7 and 8. I might login and drink my coffee and answer emails before having a shower.
I take breaks/absences during the day too as I balance my workload. As long as I am responsive when needed nobody knows or cares. (This is why I am answering this post and not doing important work!)

SageMist · 26/07/2022 13:27

I haven't bothered to set an alarm for work for a couple of years now. I wake up around 5:30 - 6:30, and generally start work between 7:30 and 8:00.

Those of you waking up before 8:00am - is that because you wake up naturally that early? Or because you set the alarm? If the latter, do you not like a lie in?

Bit of both - normally naturally awake by 7, set an alarm for 6 some days to go for a nice walk before work. We can choose our start time (depending on meetings) and just like an early start. Feels like we get the day off to the right start and I can get a grip on the house too (laundry on, tidy, quick hoover etc etc) and then my evenings can be more relaxing.

EmpressaurusWitchDoesntBurn · 26/07/2022 13:33

6am for an 8.30-9am start. I wake early anyway & that gives me time to go for a run, get a coffee somewhere & play with the cat before starting.

BlossomWood · 26/07/2022 13:40

I've can log in from 6.30am to 9.30am. so I've got my alarm set for 8.15 (usually start to stir from 7.30am) get showered and ready and logged on for about 9.15 ish.
If I've got afternoon plans I just need get logged on earlier so I can finish earlier.
I like my sleep and got into the habit of falling asleep at around midnight. I need to address that as I'd like to be waking up earlier (would love to be one of these people that wake up refreshed in the morning)

CointreauVersial · 26/07/2022 13:41

Well, I'm contracted to start work at 8.30am, so get up about an hour before then.

But it's nice, because if I want to be lazy I can basically stumble downstairs in my joggers five minutes before, and eat my breakfast at my desk. No commuting, nice clothes and face full of slap.

Maddogsandtoplessenglishmen · 26/07/2022 13:56

8:15 for 8 30 start

Maddogsandtoplessenglishmen · 26/07/2022 13:57

Honestly as someone with chronic insomnia WFH has made my health significantly better. No longer having to get up at 6:30 to go work when I didnt fall asleep until 3am or worse is amazing, the extra couple of hours sleep I get makes such a difference to my mental and physical health

BaconAndCheeseOatcake · 26/07/2022 14:02

6:00 then go for a short walk, I like to start work at around 8:00.

TheLeadbetterLife · 26/07/2022 14:05

I'm a night owl and can't get to sleep before midnight, so 8.30am out of bed and start around 9 or 9.30. No children, but the various animals wake me up earlier than I would like some mornings.

My work is very flexible and I often work in the evenings or whenever I feel like it. My brain is at it's most focussed in the mornings and between about 8pm and 10pm. In the afternoons I do physical stuff like workout / gardening / running errands.

IRememberXanadu · 26/07/2022 14:09

I'm weirdly jealous of those of you who wake up naturally very early - you get more time to do stuff. I've never been a morning person and am useless in the evenings so it's not a case of starting and finishing late! I'm in my late forties so I doubt this will change...

flipperdoda · 26/07/2022 14:45

I hate myself for being "that person" already (sorry) but I never used to be a morning or evening person either - getting myself into a routine of just getting up and doing stuff in the morning has however made that change. I do go to bed early - like 8.30pm kind of early - but I can function in the mornings now!

BarbedButterfly · 26/07/2022 14:46

7.30am for an 8am start, just so I can have a shower and grab some food

redredredredlorry · 26/07/2022 15:45

Alarm goes off at 7am, gives me time to walk the dog before starting at 8am
