Received 2 refunds from a retailer...would you tell them?

So I ordered a top from a retailer online.
It was £9.99 in the sale and I paid for NDD at £5
The top was damaged in transit and they issued me £14.99 refund the same day.
On tracking it said yodel were returning item back to retailer (but they refunded before they received it )

So I re order the top again and it arrives the following day.
Love it and keeping it
Today I wake up to a email and they've refunded me a further £9.99 for the top with the second order number as reference.

So basically the first order has been returned and they think it's the second order (hope that makes sense)

Would you tell them?

Yes I'd tell them. They'll probably not bother taking the money back though.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 26/07/2022 10:46

I would because it would be theft otherwise. If they then choose not to ask for it back, you can keep it with a clear conscience

Whatalovelydaffodil · 26/07/2022 10:47

Yes

tvgatlop · 26/07/2022 10:48

I was waiting on hold for about 30 mins to get my first refund so that's annoying having to wait again due to their error

Tbh I wouldn’t bother. Their error and it’s only £10.

If it was a small indie company I’d maybe tell them, but for a chain, more hassle than it’s worth. Your time waiting on the phone for half an hour is worth £10 so see it as payment for the annoyance of having to return the first one.

toastedcat · 26/07/2022 10:57

No way

tvgatlop · 26/07/2022 10:58

It's a big fashion retailer begins with Z
Not sure I can say the name ha ha

If it were a small one-person business I absolutely would.

A massive chain? Hmm, I might or might not.

Funny how it seems to make a difference in our honesty, when in fact the situation is the same.

Not trying to be snarky! Just honest :)

Have you checked your account to see if both refunds have been made or whether it's just an email to say so?
I work in online retail and it's physically impossible to refund more than the original order value, so unless you bought more than just the one top in this transaction, then I'd say it's unlikely. What is more probable is that they refunded the full amount when you notified them. When the top was returned, it was receipted which triggered an automated email to tell you a £9.99 refund was being processed, but it probably wouldn't actually correspond with a transaction at this time, as that took place previously.

mrsfoof · 26/07/2022 12:03

(When I say account, I mean bank / credit card / PayPal etc.). Check after 3 days or so, I bet only the £14.99 refund will show.

tvgatlop · 26/07/2022 13:50

@mrsfoof I ordered the top(order number 1234) they refunded the top price and delivery charge £14.99

Then I ordered again order number (12345) and today email was just the £9.99 top price without the delivery charge and the second order number
I haven't returned the second order

Nope, I wouldn't tell them

CakeCrumbs44 · 26/07/2022 13:57

Small retailer I would tell them.
Massive retailer I wouldn't bother.

MiddleParking · 26/07/2022 13:59

I wouldn’t contact them over their error but I would be prepared to give it back if they got in touch. This happened to me quite recently with a huge retailer and they did phone me to get it back (it was a lot more money in that case though).

girlmom21 · 26/07/2022 14:08

I would tell them. These things happen and you got a top you love so you should pay for it.

CbaThinkingOfAUsername · 26/07/2022 14:09

Zara? Regardless, if its a big retailer, no, I wouldn't tell them. A small independent business, yes, I would.

MigsandTiggs · 26/07/2022 14:21

OP, please tell them as it's theft otherwise.
I recently bought a sale rack dress from a well known retailer that I was charged £1.79 for, instead of £29.99 (full price would have been about £90. When I discovered the mistake, I went back the next day to pay the difference but the manager told me as it was their mistake, not mine, I didn't need to pay any extra. For some reason this sort of thing happens to me often and I've always been told to just keep the item, and thanked for my honesty.

Decidualcast · 26/07/2022 15:07

Doesn’t matter what the size of the retailer is. Honesty shouldn’t be on a sliding scale. I would inform them as it’s not my money to keep.

RedWingBoots · 26/07/2022 15:19

I would tell them but by email.

If they choose not to read the email tough, but least I have proof I didn't steal from them.

yoshiblue · 26/07/2022 15:31

No, it's their mistake and if you don't read your emails/check statements you could have easily not noticed. I wouldn't cause myself extra life admin chasing up a problem of their own making.

Absolutely.
Morally, you should tell them.
