Art supplies for A 10 year old

TimWasMeanToMe · 26/07/2022 07:37

Dd turns 10 next month. She says she just wants art stuff for her present.
im looking for ideas.
She likes drawing anime so I thought I’d buy her a “how to draw anime” type book to help her improve.
Then I was looking at pens. Is there a decent make of coloured pens that is a few steps up from WHSmiths felt tips but not crazy expensive? Everything midrange seems to get some awful reviews when I look. Any recommendations of makes? Or pen type? (Alcohol/water based? Those Posca ones?)

Ill Get her some nice paper.

What else might a 10 year old enjoy? It doesn’t have to anime related. Something that feels a bit grown up and special.

Thanks

When Dd was that age she wanted pens with skin tones in them. I got a big set from Amazon.

Etsy might be your friend for things linked to her favourite book/movie/ TV show/ computer game.

Posca Pens are excellent, I've also found these Draw Ease Acrylic Paint Pens Set of 12 Colours, 0.7mm Tip with Fine Point & Water Based Ink - Acrylic Pens Suitable for Porcelain, Wood, DIY Craft, Mug Design, Rock Painting, & Ceramic amzn.eu/d/6TeCvg3 to be great too, you can buy refills for them too, which make them more economical.

Your DD may also enjoy having a go with this graffiti pen aswell, I've found it a firm favourite with most students in the school I work in. Splat Planet Graffiti Pen, Cordless Electric Airbrush Sprayer, Water Colour Spray Pen, Airbrush Marker Set 12 Colours, Washable Paint Pens Art and Crafts Gift amzn.eu/d/fHitoye

Poscas are great for drawing on stones or similar surfaces, they're like paint. The nibs are different thicknesses in different packs so watch out for that.

Ohuhu are good quality and the pens of choice for some YouTubers, you can get a case from Amazon.

B&M do some watercolour pens which you can use to colour but also add water to create different effects.

TK Maxx usually have some exciting stationery if you have one nearby.

What about an easel and some canvas's I brought my niece some at that age and she did some lovely drawings and painting and then gave them out for presents to family for birthdays.

RockandRollsuicide · 26/07/2022 07:54

@muffin21

I'm also looking, great list there thank you!

RockandRollsuicide · 26/07/2022 07:56
  • year ago we got one of those brands set for older dd and it turned out to be a copy/fake so do be careful when buying
mrsfeatherbottom · 26/07/2022 08:00

My arty teen loves Poscas and Ohuhu alcohol markers but if buying Ohuhu, you'll need decent paper to use as they don't work great on normal paper.

Discovereads · 26/07/2022 08:02

One of those artists wood models to guide drawing the human body.

Discovereads · 26/07/2022 08:05

I’d also buy a water colour set, brushes and pad of paper. So she can try painting and when older try out oils or acrylics on canvas.

Wow. Thanks everyone.
@Singleandproud flesh tone pens an excellent call. Thank you!

@muffin21 Ill look into that graffiti set. Thanks!

thanks @swimmingincustard . I’ll look into all those. We have a tk max very close so I’ll pop in there for a look too. I think maybe I need to go to an art shop too to look at Posca nibs in person!

@RockandRollsuicide What pen make did you buy and where from? I’m wondering if fakes account for some of the not so good reviews I’ve seen.

@Hill1991 easel and mini canvases is a great idea. I’ll pass that on to my mum who is also struggling to think of something.

There are also adult Anime/Manga colouring books.
asianacircus.com/best-manga-anime-coloring-books-for-adults/

(adult just means more challenging than childrens books).

RockandRollsuicide · 26/07/2022 08:11

Amazon, could have been the ones beginningo

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 26/07/2022 08:13

A subscription to skillshare might go down well - my 10yo budding artist loves it. They have hundreds of courses, specific to whichever genre they're into at the time and anatomy drawing etc. I rate it highly.

LadyLothbrook · 26/07/2022 08:15

I got my 10yo DD that book and the pends I chose were from a website called 'Typo' they always have different sets on sale including 'skin' shades. I was shocked with how good the quality is. They take to paper beautifully.

APurpleSquirrel · 26/07/2022 08:15

Maybe also get her some alternative mediums like oil pastels, charcoal, watercolour paints and pencils, acrylic or oil paints?

TimWasMeanToMe · 26/07/2022 08:17

@Discovereads she’d love one of those bodies. Great idea. I had thought about a manga colouring book before but had forgotten. Great idea as I guess getting the colouring right is half the skill.

@mrsfeatherbottom ill definitely look into paper. It’s good hearing recommendations for the ohuhu markers.

TimWasMeanToMe · 26/07/2022 08:24

@APurpleSquirrel charcoal and charcoal paper would go down well. Thanks.

@LadyLothbrook thanks. I’ll check out that website.

thanks @BewareTheBeardedDragon I’ll take a look at skillshare. That’s a great suggestion.

On the subject of Easels, this would be an excellent choice as it's also a box which is great for storing any art supplies, I had one bought for me about your DD's age and still have it 20 years on and it's been very well loved!

Wooden Table Box Easel | Table Easels | Indoor & Outdoor Use | Art Supplies | Table Top Easel for Kids, Artists & Beginners | Fold Away Design | M&W amzn.eu/d/5LoDFJ3

mrsfeatherbottom · 26/07/2022 08:37

The Works is great for Easels and canvases.

JaninaDuszejko · 26/07/2022 08:58

Ohuhu are good quality and the pens of choice for some YouTubers, you can get a case from Amazon.

These are the pens DD1 (14) has and she loves them.

We got her an Artful subscription for her birthday last year, she gets a box every 3 months with art supplies. I've been really impressed with the quality and think the yearly subscription is good value (the one off boxes are more expensive but I think good quality art materials always feel a bit expensive so that's probably a good sign). The Artful sets might be too grown up for a 10 yo (my youngest is about to turn 10 and he's nowhere near ready for them) there's makeandwonder.com who do art subscriptions aimed at 3-10yo (so might feel a bit young for an arty 10yo). Annoyingly I can't find an art subscription kit aimed at Tweens which I thought would be a big market.

Cyberworrier · 26/07/2022 10:11

I'd recommend a how to draw figures book. If she's into art and drawing manga type figures, she should challenge herself and have a go at drawing realistically!
(Art teacher for this age group who gets so sick of manga eyes everywhere 😩 and children being reluctant to try anything different!)

A small watercolour set and maybe a book with ideas on how to use watercolours, to experiment with them. They can be used in a variety of ways and also with felt tips, water soluble pencils etc etc. She'd need some watercolour paper.

You could also look up local art classes or courses for her age group, plenty of good Saturday classes and after school clubs around.

crazynell · 26/07/2022 10:13

Hobbycraft is great for art and craft supplies as well as storage boxes for art. And craft. Also try the Range if you have one near you. This is a good art supplier . www.artesaver.co.uk/Catalogue/ART-KITS

crazynell · 26/07/2022 10:13

Ps they do kits too
