Why is it going to take so long to get a new PM?

Is it because the MPs are all going off on holiday?

When Theresa May resigned it took six weeks to get a replacement. This is going to to take two months, and the guy has actually broken the law, so you would think they'd get rid of him with a bit more urgency than they got rid of May.

Also, things are pretty critical rn - need to sort out the NI border so it's legal, lots of economic/social problems due to low wages, energy cap due to go up the week the new person is in which presumably no one will do anything about because no one will be in charge or making decisions at that point.

So why aren't they getting a shift on?

I mean presumably they've all got enough dough behind them that if they had to cancel a holiday in order to sort out who's going to be PM it wouldn't be the end of the world for them, financially?

Crikey, you really don't understand the system at all and just want to be rude.

MPs are not 'on holiday'. Parliament is not sitting so they are working in their constituencies. Some might take a holiday with their families (who they don't see for half of every week).

MPs in the Conservative party have done their voting and whittled it down to two.

Now the Conservative party members get to vote. This process takes time because the ballot is by post. Their are regional hustings for party members etc.

It is an entirely normal process.

If there is a longer time frame this time it's because members are also on holiday and there must be time for as many as possible to vote.

Hope this helps.

Ps. The legislation you speak of would not happen during parliamentary recess regardless of if there was a change of leader or not.

Exactly 😂

That's what I thought!

PP is talking about ordinary members not mps in that sentence though.

It's not so much that the MPs are all on holiday but parliament is in recess so very few of them will be in Westminster.

The new PM will need to appoint a new cabinet and that will be a lot easier once parliament is in session and all the MPs are gathered together again.

It's because Andrea Leadsom pulled out of the race leaving May as the last candidate standing. They didn't have to go to the members. So it was unusually short.

It has nothing to do with that.

It's not as if Boris Johnson actually did anything. What do you think will be different now he is officially on gardening leave?

SeptimusWarrenSmith · 26/07/2022 14:29

Well I guess there is that. It just seems crackers to not have a PM and go off on holiday for a couple of months when there's quite a bit of work they need to be getting on with.

Because all conservative members need to receive their ballot papers and return them.

Some members will wait to the end of hustings before making a decision.
