Bit boring but parking in Edgbaston?

WhoahThereCrazyHorse · 25/07/2022 21:05

Anyone in the know in the West Mids who could advise on whether we’ll be able to park anywhere in Edgbaston next weekend when we go to the Commonwealth Games hockey which is at the uni?

Any advice / pointers much appreciated, thanks 😊

A lot of the parking will be blocked off. They’re encouraging park and ride or using public transport. ticket holders get free travel on the bus.
there are loads of residential areas nearby but parking may be restricted.

SpottyStripyDuvet · 25/07/2022 21:14

It is difficult to park at the best of times for matches at Edgbaston but there are additional road closures for the games so you are unlikely to get anywhere near. There are shuttle buses running from the city centre (that's our plan). Depending on which day, if you can avoid the rail strikes, perhaps use a train station with car park such as Selly Oak (although there may also be road closures in that vicinity) then catch the train to New Street and a shuttle bus from there. Alternatively you could park in a normal residential area a few miles away (like my road) and get the bus (free with your games tickets) or an uber.

Sorry actually read that you are going to the hockey at the uni. I saw Edgbaston assumed cricket (where we are going). Same applies though as parking at the uni isn't great and there are a lot of road closures. I think there are still shuttle buses though.

CMOTDibbler · 25/07/2022 21:17

You'll need to book the park and ride as there are so many road closures

crazycrofter · 25/07/2022 21:23

I work at the university. They’re anticipating lots of people using the train. It’s the easiest way to get there and there are loads of stations with parking on the cross city line, in either direction. On the south side for example, you could try Barnt Green, Longbridge (£3 a day), Northfield, Kings Norton, Bournville, Selly Oak.

Helenloveslee4eva · 25/07/2022 21:23

Gawd don’t try to drive anywhere near - all the roads are shut. It’s an utter pain 😂. Nice as a cyclist though as I just put my “ wimpy middle aged lady “ smile on and the people on the barriers let you through anyway 😂

User65412 · 25/07/2022 21:25

I'm going to the hockey as well! Can't wait. Parking an hour away and getting the train in as per advice - don't want to risk it!

withiceplease · 25/07/2022 21:26

Get the train to University station and walk from there I would suggest. Only a couple of mins on train from New Street

Eileen101 · 25/07/2022 21:29

No chance! Get the train. Huge car park at selly oak.

listsandbudgets · 25/07/2022 21:34

Agree don't try to park - train to University Station.

Road closures driving all the locals mad and it's going to get worse but I'm already at the end of my tether with bus problems and barely started.

Enjoy the hockey :)

babyboyHarrison · 25/07/2022 21:58

Jumping on the thread as I think there is a rail
Strike on the days we are going to see the hockey and squash which is all at the university so parking tips would still be appreciated.

crazycrofter · 25/07/2022 22:25

You could try to park at Selly Oak station car park and walk from there (15 mins or so). I‘m not sure where else you could park in the locality really. Or park at Longbridge station and get the bus up the A38 - either the 61 or 63, or there’s an X something - maybe X22?

hedwigismyowl · 25/07/2022 22:45

Bear in mind that next to the university is the biggest hospital in Birmingham so parking is very limited at the best of times! I suggest Trains or buses.

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 25/07/2022 23:13

I really wouldn't drive . Public transport is your best bet.

babyboyHarrison · 26/07/2022 10:20

It is really frustrating as we are in sutton and waking distance to the train station on the same line as university. We also have a van so need parking with good headroom. It would have been so easy if it weren't for the train strike.

crazycrofter · 26/07/2022 10:23

I think I would get the bus @babyboyHarrison or maybe drive to town, park there and get the bus to uni. But I’m not sure what town will be like during the games? The train strikes are so frustrating. We live on the south side and dd went to sixth form in Sutton by train - but I had to drove her for a couple of her A Levels due to train strikes 😬

girlmom21 · 26/07/2022 10:27

Edgbaston is a bastard to drive around when there's the smallest event on. Avoid it. Where are you travelling from?

WildCard14 · 01/08/2022 18:32

@WhoahThereCrazyHorse hi can I ask what you ended up doing please? I'm planning to go tomorrow to see the afternoon match with my 4 year old so wanted to avoid public transport if at all possible.

Also, on a separate note, do you think it will be entertaining enough for him or should I be packing loads of snacks and things to do? 😅 I thought it would be a good experience for him but really not sure what to expect!

babyboyHarrison · 01/08/2022 19:31

We ended up driving and coming from five ways went towards harborne and the drove along Richmond hill road on to Pritchatts road and parked as far down as we could and then walked the rest. Didn't hit any traffic and was easier than I expected.

WildCard14 · 01/08/2022 20:53

@babyboyHarrison oooh that's given me hope! Can I ask, how early did you arrive for the games?

Quornflakegirl · 01/08/2022 21:04

I used Park on my Drive when I went to watch a World Cup cricket match at Edgbaston a couple of years ago. It was cheap too.

mimbleandlittlemy · 01/08/2022 21:14

Definitely train if poss. Was dropping ds off at his student flat on Sunday which looks down to the hockey pitches and it’s permit parking in every residential street within walking distance.

SandcastleQueen · 01/08/2022 21:39

Parked on Tiverton Rd the other day but half the street closest to the Uni (north of Exeter Rd) is resident permits only during the Games and there were wardens about. The further you drive that way from the uni the more chance of parking, roads south of Raddlebarn Rd etc, but if you don't mind a 20/25 min walk it's worth a punt.

MissMarplesNiece · 01/08/2022 22:11

Don't drive. I had a hospital appointment on Friday - hospital next to uni - and it took me over 30 mins for a normally 5 to 10 minute drive. Goodness knows where you can park - my road is blocked off and I need a pass to get past the barrier. Unfortunately I haven't yet received the one I applied for.

WhoahThereCrazyHorse · 02/08/2022 06:26

@WildCard14 so sorry, just seen this. Hope you and your son enjoyed it. We went Sat and Sun, found a street with plenty of space near Fiveways train station and walked along the canal, was a bit of a trek though. Once the trains were back on we hopped on to University station.
