Has anyone VERY short sighted (-9 plus) got their glasses from Asda? Any good?

I’m very short sighted (-9.50 both eyes) with astigmatism and I need a +1.50 in varifocal too. Complex prescription! I have recently had to stop wearing contacts for various reasons including sjorgens syndrome.

I paid £500 for some lovely glasses at my local independent opticians which I’m very pleased with and I love the care they offer (I’m literally able to message them through Facebook and they reply if I’m worried - I’ve got retinal issues and recently had a haemorrhage due to lupus that they messaged me about and got me in as an emergency appointment).

I know £500 is much more than specsavers but I’m not a fan of our local specsavers as they’ve screwed up various glasses I’ve had before.

But I find myself looking at Asda opticians which they said includes thinner lenses and varifocals in the complete price which starts at £45 (!!) and I’m so tempted to give them a try just if anything to have a few different pairs for fun / fashion. I did think surely that price has to be too good to be true so rang them direct and asked about my own prescription thinking surely they’d say mine is too high etc and they said it would be included in the deal….!

So what I’m asking is - are they actually any good? I know obviously it must vary locally etc but any experiences welcome.

I really don’t like myself in my glasses and I’m trying to feel more positive.

My DH is very short sighted (not sure of his exact prescription) and has been using Asda for years now without issue. In fact the time he went elsewhere (more expensive) he had more problems.

My Dad used them for varifocals and my long sighted sister also uses them.

They tend to be good about minor adjustments and repairs.

Thought I’d come back and update-

Picked up my new glasses today and very pleasantly surprised!

Being VERY honest, yes I can see they’re not as thin as my £550 pair. But it’s not a huge difference and for £80 (!!) I’m not going to complain! They’re amazing value and they’ve got the prescription spot on! Can’t believe it. So chuffed! Going to be buying lots more pairs now which is lovely as it will give me a lot more choice.

@MET1E Would Asda do a -14 prescription in a suitable frame? I'm very short sighted and have a tiny choice of suitable frames. Also my optician said I can't have reactive lenses in my prescription.

MET1E · 17/11/2023 14:10

Yes we could just make sure you b
ook in to see the dispensing optician. We do light reactive in a 1.74 plastic lens but there may be a reason why not speak to the DO on the day

Thank you very much , I'll do that.
