NCing - why do you do that?

I have been on MN for years and every now and again I NC. I do that when I realise that my posts, taken all together, may be outing. However I don't 'announce' it - so why do some people say 'NCd for this' when they post? Is it because there is a drawback to NCing? If so, what is it?

Also, how do some people remember what others have said in previous posts? There are so many contributors on MN I'd be very hard pressed to remember individual posters' comments. So how do some of you do that?

You can search. But I can only find threads posted have started not ones they’ve commented on. So I’ve given up.

@Sallymaria honestly no one cares/has the time or inclination enough to go trawling through a poster's posts from days of old.

Actually some will if they disagree And get heated to checkmate you, or if you are the op they will do a background search. I find it stupid and annoying when posters announce they've done it, the only time I get it is if the op doesn't make sense or sounds like a troll.

Sallymaria · 25/07/2022 21:37

@Yerroblemom1923 lol a bit of a generalisation to say nobody would ever do this. And also incorrect. They do, especially if they recognise something specific from a post. As pp said, others will also trawl if they get into a spat with a poster. Sad but true.

Of course they will, and they should. The number of gullible posters on this site is amazing. Trolls will post all sorts of made up shite, it’s good to be able to tell that if it’s their first post and far fetched it’s likely a troll.

Likewise with some outlandish stories. Ie someone says something about their sister, AS then and see they’ve said on another thread they don’t have a sister etc etc.

Yerroblemom1923 · 26/07/2022 06:28

@ShirleyPhallus but surely many of us change details from time to time so as not to get outed anyway. (I appreciate I've just contradicted myself there!)
still think it's tragic that a) people spend that much time on MN to even notice other posters names/ stories/ details etc and b) that they can get so overly invested to go trawling through old posts.

I am still unsure how people can do 'back searches' on other posters. Not that I want to or need to. Just confused. But an interesting insight...

Before the 'upgrade' it was really simple to do, but now I think I need an online tutorial because it's not great.
That said, I'm not sure if I CBA anyway. Either report or just hide the thread, or both.

Yerroblemom1923 · 26/07/2022 12:13

Why do people "hide" a thread? Surely you can just not look at/ read it if it's causing such vexation?!

It stops it from showing up on Active, meaning there's a better list of threads I may be interested in. You can hide it without even opening it if the title is particularly Hmm so no need for any 'vexation'. Grin
