I'm taking my son to dentist the first time.

I'm taking my son to the dentist for the first time, any tips to make him feel relaxed and make it a fun activity to do? I have booked myself to see a dentist too so I'm going to do it first in front of him just to show him nothing to be afraid of.

We watched a couple of YouTube videos about going to the dentist and talked about what would happen first.

Yes, role playing first is helpful.

Don't start by thinking he would be afraid, unless there is some particular reason that he would? It's no big deal, the dentist will have seen little children before and will doubtless be friendly and gentle. They just take a little look at the teeth at that age, maybe put some fluoride paste on. He'll probably get a sticker or something afterwards which is fun.

I wouldn't go yourself in front of him personally, because adult dentistry can be a lot more than just a look and can involve noisy or sharp looking tools. It could easily be counter productive. Unless you instructed the dentist to not actually do anything for you?

If he can sit in the chair for a ride it will be fun, either with you or on his own. Most dentists have stickers, kids toothbrushes and tubes of toothpaste so he might get loaded with goodies too. Maybe even a dental mirror which will be great for playing dentists at home with you and his teddies.

it went really really well!! no tears and dentist was very happy with his teeth and attitude. We then bought him his favourite magazine as a reward. Thank you so much for all the help!!
