Does period swimwear work?

We are going on holiday soon and DD(12) will have her period for some of it. She doesn't use tampons yet, would it be worth getting a period swimsuit?

My DD has one, they’re not cheap, but seems to be worth it. However I don’t think it would last all day on the beach on a heavy day but would be fine for a swim on a heavy day or longer on lighter days.

Thank you, I might get her a normal swim suit that she could perhaps hide a pair of period pants underneath. She could then perhaps change the pants during the day.

We’ve not tried it but I suspect normal period pants would fill with water and drag. The swim bikini bottoms underneath a costume would work and are cheaper than a one piece.

You would NOT want to go in the water wearing period pants. They would fill with water and get incredibly heavy and bulky. And if you've already been bleeding into them for a while, the water will probably rinse out the blood. I suspect that would be very obvious in a pool, and in the sea there would still be potential for obvious, blood red water to be running down her legs when she stands up or wades out.

It is difficult. Maybe period swimwear bikini briefs under her normal costume, but wearing a pad for any time hanging around before going in for a swim? (Obviously she'd need to remember to go and remove the pad and wipe herself before getting in the water)

Is there no way she would try tampons? Or could you see your GP re delaying her period?

We’ve just used a Modibodi swimsuit for my daughter for the first time and I’m impressed! She wore it for swims in a pool , not all day but it was very good . Rinse in cold water afterwards and fine for the next day

Sahara123 · 24/07/2022 21:41

Just realised that Modibodi are for adults , sorry !

So glad you said this.

I had visions of the poor girls jumping in and then pink water appearing all around her.

I would 100% go to the gp and get something so she doesn't even come on. These young girls have so much to cope with nowadays regardless of pmt on holiday. I think if you ask her she'd be up for a period break while on holiday. Otherwise you may find she's reluctant to get involved in some activities.

DD tried the modibodi bikini bottoms on recent holiday and very impressed. She just wore them to swim so no idea how long they would last all day. She is 17 but quite small, ordered the smallest size and fit well

fucketyfuckwit · 24/07/2022 23:13

Thanks - very good point!

I may investigate a period swimsuit.

We are away for 14 days and she probably won't come on until day 10 so I'm not considering delaying it.

My DD has great success wearing the modibody bikini bottoms underneath her swimsuit- no issues with leaking at all

Passthecake30 · 24/07/2022 23:19

My Dd is also 12 and will be starting her period on about day 10. She’s tried and failed multiple times with tampons so it’s not meant to be yet. I’ve brought her the modi bodi bikini bottoms, I’ve said we’ll just try them in the sea at first. I’ve only brought one pair, but she’s not massively heavy, and I’m thinking on her heavier day we will work around it (rinse out at lunch back I’m our room /go to a restaurant and put a pad in for the rest of the day and paddle only?)

fucketyfuckwit · 24/07/2022 23:29

I've just bought some bikini bottoms from Modibodi. Thanks 😊
