Hate the little f'kers but they love me.

Looking for a recommended for a repellent that doesn't contain Deet please

Why not Deet?
It's supposed to be the most effective against them

BlueBloodedBlue · 23/07/2022 20:20

I have to wear something near enough every night and would prefer something with more natural chemicals in it.

Ooh so mosquites LOVE me too so I can help!! So... what you need to do is buy some Avon Skin So Soft (the green one!) as a base layer. Put it everywhere! Like you would moisturiser straight out the shower. Apparently all the whatitscalled (SAS?) use it to repel midges during training in the Highlands. I can't physically bear to put mozzie repellant all over me due to the chemicals, but as this technically isn't... and then once that's on, dab on a mozzie cream/lotion or roll on and ensure you top it up on the hours. That's what works for me. And context, I've been with someone on a night our who got 2 bits to my 63 (yes I counted). So I have my routine down to pat now.

invinovvv · 23/07/2022 20:32

On the hour I mean, not hours. And I find lotion/cream/roll on better than spray for me personally, deet or no. And wear no perfume (makes you smell sweet) and buy lemon/lime shampoo for your hair too as they don't like citron! Hope that helps as I truly sympathise 😩

MalteserGeezee · 23/07/2022 20:33

Also beloved by mosquitoes. At least one trip to urgent care every summer in the UK for antibiotics to resolve dodgy bite. Agree on Skin So Soft. You feel like a bloody greased pig wearing it, but it smells nice and I've never been bitten wearing it. I probably should wear it at home in the UK too, but I find it so greasy. I think that's how it works, bastard mozzies just slide off your oil-slick skin when wearing it 😂

Not going abroad (sadly) but was bitten twice last night in bed despite closed windows and lights off.

thank you for the recommendations, I've put a post on my Nextdoor app for an Avon person.

Natural chemicals are so good.

Digitalis, Belladonna, arsenic, botulinum.

A+ for knowing at least 4 bad natural chemicals - although I'm pretty sure I didn't say that all natural chemicals are good.

I was just asking for a more natural insect repellant than Deet which was originally developed by the US Government as a pesticide.

Smidge is great against midges. Says it is used against mosquitos too

You can order directly from the Avon website - no need for an Avon person! I use the Skin So Soft stuff too - get bitten really badly, but this helps a lot.

Gherkingreen · 23/07/2022 21:56

The Avon stuff doesn't work for me; I lived in the southern US for a while and had awful reactions to mozzie bites (think extreme swelling, needing anti-biotics) - wanted to avoid DEET so tried every sort of natural oil like lemon and eucalyptus, garlic capsules, olbas oil.
The Cutter brand of sprays are pretty good but not 100% effective. The only thing that worked to reduce risk was preventative things like covering up and avoiding sitting out in the evening.

Gherkingreen · 23/07/2022 21:59

*should add, some Cutter sprays have a low % of DEET

MrsMitford3 · 23/07/2022 22:05

Just back from holiday-DH and DC bitten excessively despite every precaution-slathering themselves with repellent and citronella candles etc.

I did not get bitten once.
I have read all sorts about why some ppl get bitten and some don't.
Think my blood must be too bitter 😂

RampantIvy · 23/07/2022 22:18

what you need to do is buy some Avon Skin So Soft

This only works on people who are moderately attractive to mosquitoes and not on people who are a walking flying insect buffet like DH who not only attracts all mosquitoes, but reacts very badly to mosquito bites.

He uses Autan which contains Picaridin instead of DEET. It aslo has quite a pleasant smell.

worriedatthistime · 23/07/2022 22:27

The avon skin so soft seemed to work for me but not dh on holiday
I use mosiguard which seemed to work when i was away , still got odd bite

worriedatthistime · 23/07/2022 22:29

It comes in spray , roll on etc
I use the stick version as find it easier to apply where needed

RampantIvy · 23/07/2022 22:37

Autan

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 23/07/2022 22:38

Skin so soft and moskinto patches

They also love me.

Hoppinggreen · 23/07/2022 22:40

I have just bought a Dyptique fragrance with Citronella and Geranium.
Its supposed to repel mozzies but I have some chemical stuff as well in case it doesn’t

RampantIvy · 23/07/2022 22:42

Patches don't work for DH. If he misses so much as a square inch when applying insect repellent he gets bitten on the bit he missed.

I think a lot of it really depends on just how irresistible you are to mosquitoes.
