Can anybody explain if there is any reason to mark an item as sold rather than deleting the listing? I cannot see the point of laving something sitting there if it has been sold.

If you sell something then immediately delete it, it seems it deletes (or at least hides) the private messages between seller and buyer, so if either have a need to communicate after the sale is complete, it's a bit of a faff.

A couple of summers ago I sold a retro slushie maker on Marketplace. A man came to collect it, gave me the asking price and went on his way. I went into the kitchen and immediately realised I'd left a part of the machine on the draining board, having washed if before he collected. I desperately tried to find the messages between us to let him know I'd forgotten a bit, took me several minutes to find etc, and he didn't see the message until he got home 20 minutes later. The poor chap had to come all the way back. I gave him £7 back for his troubles and a grovelling apology. Thankfully all was well after that but he was put out and I was £7 down (my own fault of course). I stopped deleting items after that!

Thanks that does make sense. So if I mark as sold does it eventually fall out of my listings? I would I delete it a week later or something like that?

I'm not sure if or when it'll fall off your listings. Just mark it as sold and delete after a fair period of time (to allow the buyer to contact you if they have any questions and for you to contact the buyer if you make daft mistakes like me!).
