Cheapest way to have a car for a year or two

I sold my car a few years ago because I'm in central London but now that baby 2 is coming we're moving out a bit to zone 5/6.

I think a car would be really useful for mat leave but it's just so expensive these days.

What's the cheapest way? Buy an old run around? Lease one? What about insurance and tax? Any advice welcome please

run around prices are mental at the moment due to a combination of micro chip issues for new ones and ulez expansion rumours.

so you’d be buying at the height and selling at the bottom (if the chip issue is resolved in a year or two). that said you’ll still look to lose maybe £2000-£3000 in that time over. Which may be cheaper than a lease deal on a small run about.

I’d spend £5000-£6000 on an up/ citigo/mii
0-£30 tax, insurance not high, cheap parts and pretty solid (even with high miles). Tiny economical engine.
it will still be worth a good chunk at the end (even with the chip issues) of your use as it’s got the first car and 2nd car run around factor.
Just get a 5 dr.

Car club? Public transportation?

I should qualify that loss guesstimate is based on paying £5000-£6000 on something.
obviously the higher the price the newer the car the bigger chunk your likely to lose.

@Damnautocorrect great advice thanks

@MrsMariaReynolds not convenient enough really. I want to be able to get where I need when I want to go there, not faff on public transport with a toddler and a tiny baby

You could buy a Nissan Cube, they are actually going up in value because they are unique and quite rare. Nice and modern to drive.
