Another question about Tory leadership... sorry

For those that follow politics more than I do, can I ask -

I thought they got rid of Johnson as he’d become unpopular with electorate/unlikely to win the next election. If that’s right then why have they ended up with Truss/Sunak when pundits are saying that’s who Labour would prefer to face Starmer and have more chance against. I appreciate they’ve got to win the members votes but could the Tory MPs not have manoeuvred so it ended up Badenoch/Mordaunt for example (as example of 2 Labour wouldn’t want).

Or does losing the Brexit stuff count for more with Tory MPs? It just seems odd that it’s said how pragmatic they are and prioritise winning etc and yet this decision seems to counteract that. People say Truss will be easy for MPs to get her to do what they want (as she has changed her stance on many things) but is that really worth it if she can’t win an election? Or are they still confident they would win with anyone against Labour? Why else did they get rid of Johnson at this point, other than to distance themselves from him and get a new leader in - I know they say lying got him in the end but most of the Cabinet had no trouble with it til 5 minutes before. Can someone a lot more knowledgeable explain some of this to me? Thank you.

I suspect you're ascribing a level of team work and putting their own ambition aside that's beyond most of the parliamentary Conservative Party.

Grin fair point

The Tory MPs have a range of different political views and agendas, not to mention that many have self-interested reasons for backing specific candidates who they think will give them (or have already promised them) a plum government job. They definitely don't all act together as a unit.
