Gall Stones advice

Had what we think is a gall stone attack yesterday, I called 999 thinking I was having a heart attack the pain was so bad.

I was taken to A&E but after waiting 8 hours and feeling fine by then I headed home without being seen.

I thought if I was just careful with what I eat I’d be ok until I can get a GP appointment. However I ate some scrambled eggs last night and within minutes the pain was back and lasted about 5 hours.

I don’t want to go back to A&E but I’m now too scared to eat anything. Does anyone know if it’s normal for pain after eating every time? And what could I maybe eat that’s not going to bring on another attack?

TIA

@Huntswomanonthemove I ended up having my gallbladder removed on holiday in Spain as an emergency 28 years ago, due to blocked gallstones. I had been putting symptoms off for months. OP- please get seen as an emergency- I ended up in intensive care with oxygen and catheterised etc due to putting it off!!

Go back for a second opinion, ask for pin killers to deal with the attacks. Naproxen and omeprazole.

Orange or dark urine, change to colour of your poo, extreme pain are all serious symptoms that need properly investigating asap. I ended up with jaundice, a serious infection and I’ve got signs of potential liver damage from a blocked bile duct. It’s a serious problem. Please see a doctor asap who won’t fob you off and ask for a referral to the gallbladder consultants.

Hi, hope you're doing OK, I was in a similar situation. GP arranged an ultrasound which found gallstones and then was referred for keyhole surgery to remove my gallbladder. From diagnosis until surgery it was around 8 months. During that time I ate a very low fat diet and had alcohol with no further attacks only slight pain when I'd eaten food which was a bit fatty. I felt great after the op and was back to normal within a few days.

The gall bladder/liver/digestive system are all linked.

the liver produces bile, the gall bladder concentrates and stores it, which then squirts into the stomach to break down the fats (so kind of like emulsifying it).

so in order to stops your gall bladder having to do any work (which it can’t due to the gall stone blocking the duct the idle is released from).

so if you try to eat a fat free diet then the gall bladder won’t need to work (I believe this is the case, but someone more knowledgeable……)

so small fat free meals, and avoid anything which stresses the liver.

id go for beans and pulses, wholegrains and fruit/veg. Maybe some white fish or tofu. It probably sounds really boring and bland, but anything you can eat which doesn’t cause pain has got to be a good thing?

I had my gall bladder removed when I was in my early 30’s and still follow a relatively low fat diet as not having a gall bladder can impact longer term, but my gall bladder was 3x it’s normal size and the pain was incredible.
