Covid jabs for kids

Hi,

Just had a text reminder from the NHS that we are advised to have kids vaccinated against covid and that having it done over the summer holidays would be ideal.

Both my kids (5 and 11) have had covid and recovered like it was a bad cold. It seems to me (but I'm no expert) that the virus has muted to be more contagious but less deadly, so in my mind, I wasn't going to get my kids jabbed with a needle. But now I'm having second thoughts. I think if it was just a spray in the nose like the flu one, I would definitely do it.

Are you going to have your kids vaccinated? Or have they been vaccinated already?

@Piggywaspushed

What benefit does my kids being vaccinated against covid have for others right now?

Just look up the evidence.

Both of mine (13 and 9) are fully vaccinated and will have all boosters offered.

The only side affects were a slightly sore arm.

Any opportunity to minimise the effects of the illness - we will take. Any opportunity to contribute herd immunity in society we will do.

Piggywaspushed · 24/07/2022 10:44

That is not true hungrycat.

Topgub · 24/07/2022 10:46

@Piggywaspushed

I have.

And the conclusion I drew was there was no benefit in vaccinating my kids.

And that was before this variant.

If you're aware of evidence that shows a clear benefit to others then I'd like to see it

My dc (6) has had all the usual vaccinations, but is not having a covid jab. I just don't think it is necessary and it is too new for proper data about its safety long term. To me the risks outweigh the benefits for children that age.

I got pleurisy after my first jab and was advised not to gave a second. It took a long time to get responses about what to do as I was getting different information but I eventually got a second jab of a different kind. It was all such a faff and worrying. I was really badly ill with pleurisy.

For my child to get it I would need to be 100% convinced it was absolutely necessary.

The risk of permanently harming his heart with such a new vax is much higher than risk from covid sniffle

This is not at all true. Get vaxxed, don't get vaxxed, entirely up to you but don't post blatant misinformation that might sway the decisions of others.

The risk of myocarditis/pericarditis in boys age 5-11 after catching covid are 12-17 in 100,000.

The risk of myocarditis/pericarditis in boys age 5-11 after one dose of covid vaccine are 1-2 in 100,000.

For the 12-17 age group the risk of myocarditis/pericarditis after catching covid is 50-64 in 100,000.

The risk following one dose of covid vaccine is just 2-3 in 100,000.

I won't be vaccinating DS (although he's slightly too young at present anyway). He's had COVID twice, last October and this July so presumably Delta the first time and Omicron the second

He was a bit off his food and grumpy and snotty and he had a cough the second time but nothing worse than a cold so I don't think it's necessary. I've had 3 jabs and won't get any more either, I've had COVID twice too and both times were a complete non-event

Stats do not mean anything. My son is under cardiology for what I, his GP and paeds cardiologist think is covid related. Its me who gad to sit with him whilst his heart is visibly pounding in his chest. Im constantly living in fear that something could happen to him.

anyone can copy and paste all the medical stats but as a parent, i fear i made the wrongs choice which I have to live with.

kids do not need a vaccine. And I will never get a covid vaccine ever again

FarmerRefuted · 24/07/2022 12:04

You made the best choice you could at that time with the information available to you, it sounds like your sin is getting good care for his issue and I hope he makes a full recovery.

However stats do mean something, they show the facts that enable people to make their own choice that they believe to be best (and that's true whichever direction that choice goes in). Stats take the emotion out of the situation.
