Send me strength, it starts in an hour. I walked her in to school this morning for the very last time 😢 Feeling very emotional already! How many tissues should I take? Who else is in the same boat today or has been this week?

Yes,me this morning my dd is my youngest . Once I saw other parents with tears I welled up and all the staff and children at the school gave them a guard of honour and was clapping and cheering as they made their way out of the school gate for the final time. I was the one handing out tissues as I'd come prepared.

Ah so lovely! My daughter is only young but even I was sad at the year 6 leaving part, you can't ever imagine your child getting so big and then they do!

Yodaisawally · 22/07/2022 13:48

DTs finished Y6 on Tuesday. I walked them to school even though they have been walking by themselves all year, no more kids so that's the end of primary for us. Held it together during the leavers mass, which was lovely, but the nicest bit was all the younger kids staying behind to cheer them out as they left for the last time. I was more proud of them all by that point.

They had also warned me not to cry and embarrass them😂

I remember ds1 leavers assembly, I was always a bit whatever about school but even I got a tear in my eye when they sang one more step along the world I go 🤣

Had this yesterday morning 😭
Assembly was lovely, the staff and kids did a great job, but yes tissues are a must 😢

I'm welling up reading these! DS finished Y11 this year and even though he's staying on for 6th Form, I felt rather emotional at his Y11 Leavers Assembly. However, I remember his Y6 Leavers Assembly like it was yesterday and still feel emotional. DH was in floods of tears and the teachers had to hand him a box of tissues, but DS made us so proud as he won the school Science prize (this made DH sob even more!!) 5 years later, he's about to start a summer work experience programme at Great Ormond St Hospital, with hopes for a career in medicine.

For those of you about to start the secondary school journey, make the most of every moment. It goes far too fast!

My DS finished last year and they had a graduation ceremony with caps and gowns. I felt very proud of him and emotional but didn’t cry. He was excited to leave the school because his friends had fallen out with him a few weeks beforehand for very little reason other than the fact he was going to a different secondary school. He honestly practically skipped out of the school.

DD leaves next week and it will be totally different with her, I think she’s going to be very upset so I’m preparing to support her.

I was emotional at all my dcs year 6 leavers assemblies. Ours had a slideshow of photos taken during all their fun trips and activities throughout the year which was enough to set me off, especially as the kids weren't all going to the same secondary so it felt like the end of an era. My eldest has now left school and sixth form completely and is onto the adult stage of life. I swear the teenage years go quicker than the primary years.

I’ve just been to one in my role as governor and shed a few tears, even though I don’t have any DC at the school!

This very true Ds1 goes into year 11 in September it's absolutely flown by not helped by covid tbf .

I feel like we missed out, reading these posts. My DS left primary school last year, there was no leaving assembly, no fanfare, no leavers caps. Just a hoodie. Meh.

ThomasinaGallico · 22/07/2022 15:47

I felt curiously detached at both of my DCs’ leaver assemblies. They were decidedly unsentimental about their primary school years, never having been particularly favoured, and couldn’t wait to move on. I’m normally quite emotional at occasions like these, but not those times. Quite a weird experience.

Playplayaway · 22/07/2022 15:52

A few years ago now, but at my dd's primary leaving assembly they sang The Circle of Life and You've got a Friend in Me. Everyone was in bits 😪

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 22/07/2022 19:03

It was very emotional 😢 they showed a slideshow of photos of all the kids from the last 7 years, there were some very adorable photos from their younger years when they were still tiny 🥲 there was lots of crying, from parents, staff and pupils from all years! The teachers had put out tonnes of boxes of tissues, they were dotted all over the hall every few feet 😄

Glad to read I'm.not the only one. Putative was Tuesday and I still feel.a bit sad.
I keep looking at her little summer dress on the line and welling up.
She's number 5 and the youngest and I've had a child in primary for.30 years 😪

Ledkr · 22/07/2022 19:07

Putative???? So odd.
I.meant to.say ours.

OhTheLeetleHandsAndFeetle · 22/07/2022 19:16

I was dreading DD’s but fortunately the Head is very boring and not very good at that sort of thing, so I managed to stay dry eyed (and awake, which was even more miraculous). The kids were all made a fuss of, which is the main thing.

FourChimneys · 22/07/2022 19:20

My DCs school had the good sense to put a small packet of tissues on every chair for the Nativity and the Leavers Assembly.

WhatsInAMolatovMocktail · 22/07/2022 19:26

Not a single tear shed at my dad’s leaver assembly! After the hell of home schooling I think all the parents can’t get away fast enough !

Baaaaaa · 22/07/2022 19:43

Full snot, red-eyed parasympathetic snivelling for me. Tissues didn't help. I didn't expect it at all.

They sang that "once I was seven years old" song but adapted and personalised it. Was v sweet.

It's such a milestone. The school gate years are over!

toooldtocarewhoknows · 22/07/2022 21:18

My youngest finished today. I'm on my knees after 18 years of school drop offs and pick ups after 4 children. I'm ready to stop. Bitter sweet day but I didn't have the energy to cry!

Tonight I feel euphoric. I'm going to go back to work and become a person in my own right again, not a battling SEN mother. Yessss
