15 year old feeling dizzy and blue lips

My healthy 15 year old has started a new job this week in a pub kitchen. She says things were fine for a bit then all of a sudden her vision went blurred, she felt really dizzy and her lips went blue. She says it was the heat and the smells.

same thing happened last summer when she worked in a cafe. I just thought she wasn’t used to standing up for that long

i am trying to get through to the drs but engaged.

just not sure if anything to be worried about. Surely she should be able to stand up for a longish period without feeling like this.

anyone any thoughts?

Low iron. This happened to me when pregnant x

Rojjahri · 22/07/2022 13:33

If her lips were going blue someone should have phoned 999

Was it witnessed?

MolliciousIntent · 22/07/2022 13:34
  1. This is not normal and could well be a sign of a serious deficiency or a heart condition.
AnyFucker · 22/07/2022 13:34

Sounds like it could be POTS

Evenstar · 22/07/2022 13:34

I think I would call 111 as you are unlikely to get an appointment today at the GP and I would want her seen.

Elsiebear90 · 22/07/2022 13:35

It sounds like heat syncope, it happens to me, it’s not anything to worry about, but won’t hurt talking to the doctor and getting their opinion.

AnyFucker · 22/07/2022 13:36

Pots

PeggyGa · 22/07/2022 13:38

It will be the standing up, I had this for years from my early teens. Worked in a factory for a bit and fainted a few times. It's worse when it's hot. The symptoms are very similar to hypoglycaemia

Namechange600 · 22/07/2022 13:41

Pots

deepbreath · 22/07/2022 13:49

Another vote for PoTS, my dd has it alongside her rare-ish connective tissue disorder. Standing up for long periods in the heat may have triggered this episode. Please keep trying to get through to the GP.

PeggyGa · 22/07/2022 13:49

got a drs appointment in 2 weeks

she wants to work but obviously is struggling to stand

what would you do?

Interesting about the pots. I've been to the Dr's multiple times about it over the years and always been dismissed. I also suffer from raynauds which I believe can be linked

SpaceJamtart · 22/07/2022 13:53

Could it be a panic attack?
I used to have them as a teenager where I didn't think I was worried or panicking but there was a lot going on, and generally it was hot and busy and then my arm went tingly, blue lips, dizzy and felt really weird, and as if I could cry but I didn't.

I got it checked out because I never felt like there was a trigger for it to be a panic attack but thats what it turned out to be. They did an ecg to make sure.

PeggyGa · 22/07/2022 14:02

Don’t think it’s a panic attack but I guess it could be any of these things

I feel awful I literally thought she was just lazy 🙈

I cannot believe your daughter had blood lips and you didn’t call 999 - it’s one of the reasons you need too! Sorry that’s not to disbelieve it / her / you - just the crappiness of people not using services as needed and when needed.

please ask for a more urgent GP appt and if it happens again phone 999.

it could be a huge range of things many of which are not serious but there’s a small chance it could be something serious.

(And this is me not being a dick - I have had blue lips before and it is unfortunately something serious).

if the ambulance comes and assesses her and it’s not urgent they can do a referral to GP / out of hours etc.

and there is a lot of misinformation on this thread too. Also take a video / photos / or get someone else too when it happens.

sounds like it lasted a long time if it happened and you witnessed it, I’m assuming, some time later?

actually to be honest - I would go to a and e if she’s still struggling to stand without the blue lips continuing.

QuestionableMouse · 23/07/2022 01:10

Not safe for her to work and ideally she needs checking before the appointment!

FindingMeno · 23/07/2022 01:13

Another possibility is covid?

PeggyGa · 23/07/2022 12:10

She had blue lips but felt ok when I picked her up so I honestly didn’t think it was a 999 job

not covid

@PeggyGa you say she is healthy but are you confident no hidden eating disorder - my daughter has anorexia and would frequently faint/collapse. When she had weekly observations at GP/CAMHS they would check her postural drop by taking blood pressure in sitting and then standing position and would do a nail bed test looking for circulatory issues. In my experience of eating disorders, sufferers often have vicarious interest in food looking at blogs etc so working in a pub kitchen could also offer that.

ofwarren · 23/07/2022 12:26

Blue lips is always an emergency
I rang my GP and the receptionist got me an appointment that day when I said my son had blue lips.
He was sent to hospital that day and had ECG and a heart scan.

PeggyGa · 23/07/2022 12:30

I don’t think eating disorder she eats a lot, always hungry but doesn’t seem to overeat.

I just don’t know

Google the NASA lean test and see if she has POTS. You can do it at home with a pulse oximeter and BP monitor. That will tell you if that's what she's dealing with.

Pinklady245612 · 23/07/2022 17:21

Absolutely get her checked by a doctor

If it is the standing for long periods, I still get this but would struggle more as a child / teen. My dad and aunt had the same thing, and the doctors aren't worried about my son who is the same way. My advice to her would be to keep switching legs. If I'm in a long queue and I start to feel giddy this helps me, something to do with blood pressure.
