Young glasses wearers - when did your eyesight stop deteriorating?

DD is 4.5 and has been wearing glasses since she was 2.5. She has astigmatism (-2.75 R, - 2.50 L) and myopia (-3.25 R, - 3.00 L) in both eyes. Her prescription was updated in December but in May the eye hospital felt her eyesight was deteriorating too quickly in her right eye. They recommended eye patching for two months to see if it was a lazy eye and if the level of deterioration would even out. She had it checked again both eyes have evened out but now both are worse than they had hoped for this amount of time. I know there are health risks that come with higher prescriptions, and it would ease my mind to get an idea.

So those of you who started wearing glasses young, when did your eyesight stop getting worse?

After puberty. I was told if it deteriorates more than 1 in a year, they will treat to correct ( no idea how, 12 has just got first glasses)

Research MiyoSmart lenses for glasses. Proven to slow myopia.

I’m a high myope and also a Dispensing Optician.
Myopia tends to slow down when people reach their early to mid twenties.
Myopia management is a big topic right now in optics, and there are a few options in the form of contact lenses and spectacle lenses which you could explore with your Optician. If your Optician is not offering myopia management - and not all do currently - then do ask around if any local practices do if that’s something your interested in.
One other suggestion to help improve rates of myopia has been more time outdoors for children and less screen time.

Oh that's interesting, I didn't know they could treat! I will have to wait and see how much they've deteriorated.

Mine has carried on through adulthood (I'm in my 50s now). I don't know what prescription I started with age 7 but I have gradually needed stronger and stronger prescriptions ever since, it has slowed in the last 10 years again but I'm -12 now. I don't know what options there are now to slow it's progress but would definitely look into it if I was younger or my children became myopic.

Ah okay, so quite a long time to go yet then! DD is currently seen at the eye hospital, due to her age I believe. When we have spoken about managing Myopia they have said that it will continue to deteriorate with or without corrective lenses, the lenses will just help her see. And they've encouraged less screen time and atleast an hour outside every day (which we are already doing).

If there are options for helping with myopia though I will have to have a look. I have noticed her struggling more recently.

I started wearing glasses at 3/4 and I’m now 41. There weren’t any sort of corrective options etc when I was younger so we just wore glasses and that was that…! I’m a -9.50 in both eyes now with severe astigmatism and lattice degeneration (which is a retinal condition, but not particularly related to myopia). I think my eyes stopped changing at about 25 - I’ve had the same prescription since then. I’m now going through posterior vitreous detachments in both eyes where the jelly separates from the back of the eye and it’s very unsettling because being highly myopic there’s a higher chance of retinal detachment so it’s very worrying. Every flash and floater I get I panic! I’ve been properly checked out though.

I started wearing glasses when I was 7 and I'm now 32. I had my eyes tested annually pretty much into adulthood and my prescription had always deteriorated, sometimes by a fraction of a point, sometimes by a whole point. It stabilised at -7.0 (both eyes, severe astigmatism to boot) in my mid 20s and, I'll admit, I didn't bother having my eyes tested again until I was 30, and only because I needed an updated prescription to order new sunglasses Blush

Weirdly, my eyesight improved in that time - I'm now -5.5 in both eyes, though I still can't see a damn thing without my specs so it makes no practical difference!

Octomore · 21/07/2022 22:52

Mine seemed to taper off in my mid/late 30s. My prescription still changes a bit every couple of yrs, but now it's very minor tweaks.

DramaAlpaca · 21/07/2022 23:00

I started wearing glasses at 9. I'm shortsighted and it stopped getting worse in my early 20s. It settled down at -8 in one eye and -7.50 in the other.

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 21/07/2022 23:09

Started wearing glasses at 5. Mid–30s now. I'll let you know when they settle… To be fair my myopia more or less stopped getting worse by my mid-teens, at around -11D give or take, but they fluctuate by a quarter/half a dioptre or so every couple of years, and the last few years my astigmatism has been worsening so that I now have to wear toric contacts. Deep, abiding joy 😒

sickofthisnonsense · 21/07/2022 23:17

My DD and is 14.
Diagnosed with a 'lazy' eye and wore patches from aged 6-8/9.
Glasses ever since.
His last test her eyesight has actually improved!

sebbiesmum · 22/07/2022 07:21

My nearly 5 year old has had glasses since 2 he is extremely myopic with a -10 and -10.5 some years we have a slight increase and some years none but usually no more than a .5. We're also seen at the hospital. If you haven't already I would join the Facebook group For Little Eyes. It has amazing advice for parents with kids in glasses and comforting hearing shared experiences. Mine is still too little for lenses but when he gets to 7 it's something we'll explore for him.
