WFH in compact space

Sorry, wasn't sure where to post this.
I'm due to start WFH soon and I'd like to create a dedicated workspace so I don't end up on the sofa or in bed!
I don't have a lot of space to work with so just looking for any tips/space saving/storage ideas, and ideally a pointer to a desk that may double up as a small dining table?

Not sure I can help, I just work at our dining table! Though I would maybe look for a table that doesn't have much depth, such as a one size one rather than an extendable one. It's more comfortable to work at if there is plenty of room for your knees.

Other than that I would just suggest a good light, and some well designed storage so it is really easy to sweep your work away and get your table back. If it's not easy, you won't do it and it'll stay impinging on your home space.

Would something like this work?

Thank you both!
@Dewsberry I'll be fairly close to a big window for natural light and can add in a lamp if needed. The storage is a good idea- I was looking at desks with storage built in but shelving may be a better idea so I can get everything out of the way properly.
That's an interesting one @MaggieMagpie357 I'll measure up and see if I could comfortably get my chair in. The only space I have really is an alcove and I'd like to face the window if possible.
I was looking at this: www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/norden-gateleg-table-white-10423886/#content
But I'm not sure if the leg would get in my way!

I think that table looks a great choice

Firstly look at apartment therapy or houzz for ideas

I agree it’s nice to look out of the window… in your shoes I’d fit the alcove with shelves/storage (maybe some closed storage) for anything you need, then this table can pull out when you are working & fold up when not … there are also desks that rotate out etc …

What room is the alcove in? I find avoiding your own bedroom & ideally living room better for relaxation/state of mind but that’s not easy

Maybe you could get an attractive office chair that fits into your decor?

Wayfair is also good for office chairs/desks, also the futon company

I think that table would be awkward to get a computer chair under.

I was looking at this desk earlier, as I liked the storage at the side of it. Could something like this work?

We have that table @ISeeTrees. If you orientate it the right way round so the leg is at the other side, like the opposite to how they've done it in the picture next to the green wall, it's fine.

ISeeTrees · 22/07/2022 05:57

Thanks @BlooberryBiskits it would have to be in the living room but it's about as tucked away as it can be. I want to avoid the bedroom at all costs, I have trouble enough sleeping without work stress being in my face!
@TokenGinger I missed that one! It looks a great choice, I was considering picking up an extra kallax while I was at IKEA! It's a bit more "permanent" than I was looking for but the storage would be fantastic. I can't see exactly how that table top fits, I wonder if I could hinge it some how 🤔
Thank you @BarbaraofSeville I'm seeing a friend this weekend who I think has it so going to try before I make a decision. I can see what you mean though. I love the idea of tucking it all away for the weekend!

What about a bureau desk?

Ikea sell one, but your best option is probably secondhand Facebook marketplace or eBay and maybe up cycle it to your style.

The huge advantage of them is the amount of storage, and that you can fold the lid up to hide all office related stuff when your not working

@Caspianberg I love the idea of a bureau desk, I'm just not sure how comfortable it would be to sit at?! The desk height always looks a bit awkward somehow and I'm worried the drawers would get in the way of my legs/feet? I'll have a look and get the tape measure out!

@ISeeTrees - I think you can get all different heights and depths. So might just be a case of finding one not as high, or smaller for your space.
I saw a lovely small one secondhand for £20 online I’m tempted to get and paint for Ds bedroom.

I have a computer desk, and have reduced paperwork by about 95% since working from home most of the week. Use the back of old envelopes and then shred them.

KupoNutCoffee · 22/07/2022 08:05

I have that kallax combination.

There is a specific fitting that Ikea do that fits them together. A pair, where there's one side for the thinner kallax and one for the desk.

Very sturdy, only damage to the underside of the desk top so could dissemble and reconfigure.

Only 'annoyance' is boxes straight under, where the fittings get in the way, but I have magazine files there and they're not too bad to get out.

Personally, I'd say the chair is more important than the table, but they're harder to compact.

Passthecake30 · 22/07/2022 13:21

I work at the kitchen table, but just coming on to say I also barely have any paperwork, an a5 notepad and some scrap paper for workings that go into the shredder. Will you need storage?

emmathedilemma · 22/07/2022 13:34

89x80cm on that Ikea table should be ok to work off. My dining table is 90x90 and I can comfortably work with my laptop plugged into a widescreen monitor, keyboard and mouse (I can't work off a laptop only, it's too small for what I do). If i want to use the laptop open for a 2nd screen or video calls then it's not really wide enough as closed down it sits behind my monitor.
