NHS pension contribution too high?

Any NHS pension experts? I previously was full time and unenrolled from the pension scheme with full withdrawal of my contributions during mat leave. I moved trusts after my leave ended and re-joined the scheme on a 0.75 contract at a higher banding.

I’ve just had my increment (band 7) and see that my pension contribution has increased as it’s based on a full-time wage. This has meant I’m not taking home any more pay each month. Does this seem right? If I am part time now and stay that way forever, will my pension contribution always be based on a full time salary? Will I then receive a pension based on full-time hours? I only joined a few years ago so believe I’m under the 2015 scheme.

Im not an NHS expert. But most pensions are a % contribution. So for arguments sake 10% of part time hours or 10% of full time hours. Its nothing to do with hours worked but just 10% of earned salary.

So yes, it should have gone up with your increased banding. But perhaps not this much.

You need to find out what % your monthly contribution should run at and work out if you are doing more then that.

You could check old full time payslips, part time payslips and then the current ones.

From what I've read on an NHS Facebook group I'm on I think that is how it's done Sad you Def need to contact payroll though and check

You pay 9.3% at the bottom of a band 7, even if you're part time. It's based on full time equivalent. I'm in the exact same position.

Under the 2015 scheme you get a career average pension, you get a "piggy bank" for each year you've paid in. Just remember your 9.3% is topped up by about 20% by your employer. It's not the gold plated pension of old, but it's definitely worth being in.

I think from September part time staff will pay less - it was meant to be from April but got postponed, I think it drops to 8.3% for me but it depends what you earn.

@FlyingFlamingo thanks for that link, I thought the plan had been shelved, so glad it hasn't been! Although I'm top 7 after Jan, and with the proposed pay rise I'll be 9.8% on part time, so another real term cut to take home pay 😪

I am in a similar position @Schooldil3ma - I have temporarily increased my hours and if I choose not to reduce them I’ll be paying 9.8% as well, if I go back by the 4 hours I went up by I’ll pay 8.3% Hmm

This happened to me. The pay rise pushed me from 9.5% to 12.5% last year, also top band 7 but only part time, so I was left worse off each month. Good news this October with the pension reform it will drop back down as you will be pensioned on what you earn not your wte.
