How are your children coping in the heat?

Mine are miserable! 6 year old has been moody and irritable since coming home from school and has been winding up the 3 year old constantly! As for the 3 year old she's suffering badly she's not drinking anywhere near enough, has done about 3 wees in total all day, is sweaty and miserable and not herself at all. We have fans in their bedroom and they are stripped down to just knickers/nappy but it's still far too hot (and they have the coolest room!). All I've seen on fb is pictures of happy children in paddling pools (we don't have a balcony or garden) or just looking generally unfussed and happy. Is anyone else struggling to cope with miserable children?.....cooler weather can't come soon enough for us 😫

6yo DS is very tired - he demanded to go to bed early tonight and didn’t even want a bedtime story. I don’t think he drank enough at school today, although we topped him up as much as we could once he got home. We do have a garden and a paddling pool but we’re in Norfolk so it’s still too bloody hot to use them! So he’s been stuck inside. I hope it’s cooler tomorrow for them.

We're south east I don't know how anyone is enjoying being outside to be fair - it's still 33 degrees outside and stifling.

One of mine is fine. Bouncing off the walls. Splashed in the paddling pool but then complained it was too cold for her. Lay in the full sunshine for an hour colouring and protested when I moved her to the shade - ‘but it’s cold there mummy!’ Ate and drank normally. Went to bed fine. Never looks sweaty or peaky, has gone a lovely golden brown despite factor 50.

My other DD is on her knees. Been too hot since about 7am - woke at 5am as couldn’t sleep due to heat. Has cried on and off all day, looks sweaty and red, is miserable. Struggled to eat and drink and nap. Fell asleep at 6pm but has been up 3 times since.

Chalk and cheese. Hot DD definitely takes after me though.

Ds is off school as he broke up last week. He’s fine if we leave him be to play gadgets in front of a fan, but as soon as we make him do anything (we had to run some errands) he dissolves into dramatic tears and is utterly fed up. He’s 10, and announced before bed he’s not sure he wants to go on holiday any more as it’s not fun to be hot, bless him!

My DD is two and we've been to hospital today as she's been so unwell with the heat, she was vomiting and couldn't keep water down (it's happened before in the heat). She's just so sensitive to it! But we know for sure now we have to be super cautious and keep her in an air conditioned room
@Thefailinghousewife I agree with your DS about holidays!! Lol

KevinTheKoala · 19/07/2022 21:35

@Caneloalvarez oh bless her I hope she's feeling better soon poor thing 😢
@Thefailinghousewife oh poor boy, I'm sure he will enjoy your holiday much more than the heat we've had the last couple of days! Although I don't blame him for feeling that way at the moment

My DD3 has been surprisingly not too bad apart from struggling to get her to fall asleep tonight. Nursery have been fab and have kept them well sun creamed and one of the staff brought a kiddie garden sprinkler/splash pool in for them to use this afternoon. It's my teen that's flagging, she has refused to come anywhere near outside and has been shut in her room with blackout curtains firmly shut all day ( school hols thankfully) mind you I think she'd prefer to do that every day😂

Do you have a bath they could play in?
Even a tiny paddling pool with 2 inches of water in the flat would be OK?
Watermelon for fluids.
Ice lollies xxx

One year old and a two year old, both been fine. They have spent most of the last two days dressed in their nappies playing indoors, the house is old and built of wattle and daub so it tends to stay fairly cool especially as we have a big overhang on the roof to keep the sun off the upstairs windows. We did get outside in the morning as we have lots of mature trees that provide lots of shade in the garden. They have both slept well which is a blessing too.

KevinTheKoala · 19/07/2022 21:58

Yes they've had 3 showers/baths today, we put the plug in whils they shower and then just let them play at the end but the 3yo hasn't even wanted to play. They've
got through a few ice lollies each though which is something.

Tired and miserable but I think that's a combination of the heat and the final days of term!

DoubleGauze · 19/07/2022 22:07

None of them like it , but my 5yo is the hardest hit. He's autistic and non verbal , he's very sensitive to the heat too and gets visibility wound up and paces around of he's not kept cool. I've been following him around with a spray bottle filled with cold water pretty much all day and put him in the paddling pool as much as he will allow. Thankfully he loves ice lollies and cold drinks.

It's so hard for small children. I hope yours are okay now that it's cooling down op.

mynameiscalypso · 19/07/2022 22:14

My three year old is totally insane. Insisted on snuggling under his 7 tog duvet at bedtime (which I have since removed). I don't mind the heat particularly but he seems to thrive on it.
