On holiday… what should I read?

I made a schoolboy error in coming on holiday without a book. I even forgot the magazine that arrived 2 days before we departed. Any recommendations for books I can get for the kindle (I think I have the app on DHs iPad).

i don’t fancy a thriller and I don’t really do chicklit. I love historical epics but open to recommendations.

Circe by Madeline Miller. It’s mythological and is one of my favourites, I can read it again and again

Signature of all things
poisonwood bible

Where The Crawdads Sing. Then you can go and watch the film when you get home. ☺️
The Member of The Wedding by Carson McCullers is a fave of mine.
Life After Life.

Where are you? It's nice to have a book set in the area you are holidaying in.

LisaSimpson77 · 19/07/2022 20:33

I've just read to brilliant books:
The quarantine station by Michelle Montebello
And
The company daughters by Samantha Rajaram

Both well written, easy reads but written about unusual and interesting times/places in history.

The seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo.
It's a perfect holiday read. Everyone I know has loved it.

I’m reading The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker.

Set in Ancient Greece. Written from the point of view of the women captured as slaves during the Trojan War.

Really excellent so far.

Wow thanks everyone, I might only get around to reading extracts tonight while I make a decision, I have two and a half more weeks so plenty of time.

@DelphiniumBlue I am in southern Denmark so if anyone can come up with a recommendation for that area it will be top of my list, as long as it’s in English!

Adore this book, can finish it and instantly start it again.
Crawdads also excellent, looking forward to the film.
I always ignore the books I take in favour of the hotel offerings of Danielle Steele and Marian Keyes et al, I love a light read on holiday.

Poisonwood Bible is great! Great Circle by Maggie Shipstead is bit historical and really good.
I’ve just finished An Officer and a Spy by Robert Harris never read any of his before and was bit dubious. It’s about the Dreyfus affair and was gripping.

A man called Ove by Frederik Backman. He's a Swedish author. It's a very different, compelling read which I really enjoyed. Also Britt-Marie is doing Fine, by him.

Seven Sisters series -Lucinda Riley - there is romance in it, but all the books have a secondary story set in a historical period. They’re not chick lit as such, more a story with romance in it.

Robert Harris - writes good books set in different historic times. Good books.

Greaterthanthesumoftheparts · 19/07/2022 20:44

@confusedofengland i have read A Man Called Ove, it took a bit of getting into but I really enjoyed it. I might go and see the film once home.

Lucretia Grindle The Villa Triste - amazing, part historical and part modern day.

DelphiniumBlue · 19/07/2022 20:55

Meet me at the Museum by Ann Youngson - just read this, great writing.
Music & Silence by Rose Tremain - haven't read this but have very much enjoyed other books she's written.
