Can this heat make your temperature high?

user19881 · 19/07/2022 19:10

My 3 year old keeps having a high temperature and the it drops again.

This is over the afternoon up until now.

It is going from normal to 39.8. He is himself, bit lethargic due to the heat. He has drank lots but not eaten a huge amount.

I gave him calpol and put him to bed.

Can the heat do this to you, or is he definitely unwell?

Please any help would be really appreciated

been wondering the same with my 2 year old

user19881 · 19/07/2022 20:45

Maybe it's a thing?

Calpol has bought my sons temperature down to normal.

I just done mine and it's doing the same thing!

I have been checking daughter and partner to check my thermometer isn't broken, but they are both normal and consistent!

I have been to a&e with heat exhaustion. My temperature was 39.1

NannyGythaOgg · 19/07/2022 20:48

Young children don't regulate their body heat very well.

Plenty of fluids, Calpol is good and wipe him down with damp but not cold flannels/cloths. Ideally keep the air moving - even if it's warm air it still helps.

It's cooler tomorrow, so if he is still spiking a temp then get advice

carefullycourageous · 19/07/2022 20:51

You need to read the NHS page on heat exhaustion and think through whether you need medical advice. No one can advise you properly on here but I personally would be concerned by the high temp and the sleepiness: www.nhs.uk/conditions/heat-exhaustion-heatstroke/

carefullycourageous · 19/07/2022 20:51

I also would not be giving calpol unless you think it is viral.

itsgettingweird · 19/07/2022 21:01

During the summer during covid my mum turned to a hospital apt and her temp was raised.

They told her to sit in the shade for 10 minutes and they'd retake it.

It was normal.

So I'd imagine the sun on your skin could heat it up enough to make an inaccurate reading?

amusedbush · 19/07/2022 21:09

There have been points on and off over the last couple of days where I have felt like my skin is sizzling, like when you have sunburn and it feels like the heat is radiating from you. DH agreed that my chest and the back of my neck felt roasting hot to the touch - we were sitting in the same room with the fan on and he was comfortable.

I struggle to regulate my temperature though thanks to PoTS, and I've just read that ADHD medication can raise your temperature so that won't be helping!

Justfortherandomquestions · 19/07/2022 21:11

I think it's a thing too, my two young children have been the same this week, high temperature on the thermometer straight after school. Then absolutely fine as the evening goes on.

strgirl · 19/07/2022 21:15

My 4 year old has been the same today, and also been sick, given her some calpol and her temperature has come right down this evening.

midairchallenger · 19/07/2022 21:20

Yes that's what heatstroke is and why the red weather warning references a threat to life.

Utini · 19/07/2022 21:24

Heat stroke / heat exhaustion can raise your temperature, but paracetamol wouldn't lower it in that case. So if paracetamol is helping then it's likely to be viral.

AnnaMagnani · 19/07/2022 21:34

Are you checking with a forehead scanning thermometer?

Because one thing I learned working somewhere that did temp checks during Covid is that they are wildly inaccurate on a hot day.

I'd come in having walked across the hot car park and it would say I had a temperature. Chuck a bit of cold water on my face - fine again! Cold day - oh no, Anna Magnani you are dead, why are you at work? They can be very influenced by your skin temperature if it is hot or cold.

Do either of you have symptoms of heatstroke or a virus/infection? Otherwise the temp fluctuations may just mean the thermometer is being affected by the weather and skin temperature, not your core temp.

user19881 · 20/07/2022 07:19

Thanks everyone.

Calpol bought his temperature down straight away, and it has not gone back up. He has woke up fine and temperature is still normal.

I hope the others that mentioned their kids have been the same are all ok?
