Baby temp 38.5 and house 32c

She’s 12 months old and had her jabs yesterday morning. She was fine before her nap this afternoon and has a oscillating fan in her room. When she woke up her skin was boiling hot and temp 38.5.

I’ve given her calpol so I’m hoping her temp will come down and this is a delayed reaction to the jabs rather than the hot house.

what can I do to make her more comfortable? Fans are on, ice in front of them, blinds shut etc. I’ve been bf and giving her water.

she’s a bit clingy and hasn’t peed as much as she usually does.

our house is so hot because I made the mistake of opening the loft hatch. I read it would make the house cooler but instead it made it hotter 🥵

I have no advice but following as we’re also struggling, baby had second round of jabs and was also just put into a pavlik harness which I can’t take off 😫 absolute nightmare. 34 in our house even with fans going.

I have an 11mo. On Friday, her temperature kept going over 40. She was panting. No other symptoms. I phoned 111 and had a GP video consultation.

They said to handle it with Calpol. If Calpol stopped bringing the temperature down, to go to A&E. I checked her every two hours through the night. She had the temperature for about 24 hours.

Fortunately, Calpol did the trick. She hasn’t had the temperature during the really hot weather, but I am using wet flannels, back-to-back bf + water in a cup + formula milk + solids. She doesn’t like it, but I also keep putting her in a cool bath.

good luck.

I know you probably have but close all curtains and blinds!

@Smallsheets unless she has heatstroke being hot will not cause a temperature. Ever

Ibuprofen tends to bring my DS's fevers down much more efficiently (and quicker) than calpol, if you've got some and can administer.

Rubbing down frequently with a damp flannel. I'm currently doing this for a very floppy cat!

HuffleWoof · 19/07/2022 16:16

Okay having lived in aus and we had power cuts regularly so no a/c

Cooling mats for pets work well, stick one in the freezer and then tonight get it out and put under her sheets.

Wet top sheet, put in dryer, get out when damp lie under it with a fan over the top. Bliss

Close all curtains and blinds, close windows. Open when sun goes in.

Put pjs in freezer and put on before bed

Give her pain relief for temperature.

Fill hot water bottle freeze it. Wrap in sheet and put in bed so it's cool

Get empty milk cartons, fill, freeze and out behind or in front of fan (homemade air con)

RockandRollsuicide · 19/07/2022 16:48

Next time op remember to stop the sun hitting windows first, hang sheets outside, anything prefer white to stop the sun ☀️ hitting windows.

Closing inside helps but after my recent experiment's I know not that much!

The last time it was anything near this heat my ds was v poorly under one with severe chicken 🐔 pox.
Her temp soared and it was so hot the air was thick..

Smallsheets · 25/07/2022 08:33

Thanks all for your tips! Temp went down with calpol so must have been the jabs.

@HuffleWoof i did pjs in the freezer for me and it was so nice! Going to do the damp sheet thing next time!!

I'm really glad she's better op. Link above for anybody who stumbles across this thread with clear guidance.

Whatever you do, do NOT sponge down or put a child in a cold bath when they are feverish. They can't regulate their temperature in the same way we can and by shocking their body in this way, you risk them shivering, increasing their core temp and creating new and more serious issues.
