Cheap fun summer holidays!

Looking for ideas, for more frugal summer holiday fun!
I would love to have your suggestions for things to do in the summer holidays with the children, dd 15, ds 9, ds 7, which won't break the bank.
Dd may not do everything with us, as she's too cool these days!!

You could Google healthy holidays and your city , it’s a project for children in free school meals but then accept up to 20%other children. I’ve booked mine for a few courses this way and on a couple of short activities as a family.
also our local council organises day festival for kids which are affordable

also a day out somewhere with a picnic.

abroad- I’ve booked a cheap flight and a flat and planning to have breakfast in, lunch as picnic and dinner back at the flat or out.
visiting family somewhere
camping is an obvious choice
movie night at home with friends
skate parks, parks, playgrounds, etc

Using the swimming pool at your local nice hotel? Okay, it's not as cheap as the leisure centre but it's nicer.

Crabbing
Outdoor water park
Junk modelling
Scavenger hunts
Obstacle courses
Treasure hunts
Making s’mores on a bbq

ToastedCrumpetwithCheese · 18/07/2022 18:37

We have done a fair few Treasure Trails and they're quite good (don't forget to take a pen or two). We have several in our town and lots in the surrounding area a car drive away.

We're doing a two day trip to London as our 'holiday'. Hotel a bit outside the centre so expensive but not bonkers price. Train was quite cheap for 4. Planning to do a Treasure Trail while we're there and lots of free things.

Thank you, some great ideas. I've got 3 birthdays coming up in Sept/Oct, without even thinking about trying to save for Xmas! Me and dh work full time, it just hard isn't it. A trip to the local zoo would end up over £100 for one day out!! I just can't do it, with the price of everything else rocketing up in life, but obviously want the children to have a nice summer.

I have a few plans

picnic at a local place I found really quite and a nice stream
local outdoor pool £15 and can spend the entire day there will take our own food.
I booked a day out to a theme park was £39 for us all on wowcher again take a picnic
£10 each for a days paddle boarding (we own our own paddle boards)

we are going to be spending a lot of time at home and doing local things which we can ride to on our bikes

sadly we don’t have a lot of disposable income

Cheap Saturday morning cinema.

Primary times magazine website- search your region.
Free-events.co.uk
Boundless.co.uk
Moneysaving expert.com
Eventbrite- search free events
Visitbritian.com
These are all website which list free events and festivals.

To do at home:
Build a fort out of old pallets
Camp in the garden
Dig a small pond for wildlife
Make a bird feeder from old milk cartons
Google how to make a DIY bucket bbq if you don't own a bbq.
So many amazing things to make on Instructables.com.

Go to a beauty spot with clipboards, art materials and a picnic and do some painting or sculpting?

InterstellarDrifter · 19/07/2022 15:49

Google free summer activities in your area and book something's in.

Do you all have bikes? We do lots of bike rides and picnics. Sunday morning breakfast picnics are fun.

A trip to the beach

Have an evening pizza in the park.

Organise a big picnic with friends and family

greywinds · 19/07/2022 15:54

Starlight nature search? Couple of torches, go on a hunt for wildlife or tell spooky stories (if they're not easily scared). Star watch. Don't forget some marshmallows or late snacks.

50 things

National Trust list of 50 things to do

  • in the summer
  • back garden
  • at the beach
Some great ideas on here

Sprogonthetyne · 19/07/2022 16:44

Take a picnic to whatever outdoor places you have locally- eg. Park, woods, beach, river, nature reserve

See if your council is running anything, ours is doing free sport/swimming sessions to encourage kids to keep fit

If you have clubcard or similar, could you use points for a bigger outing

Most libraries will be running the summer reading challenge, ours also do craft sessions

Visit family, even if you just end up going to the park near their house instead, it feels different

Camp out in the garden and cook on a fire or bbq

sianiblews · 19/07/2022 17:10

These are awesome, thanks so much!
We're going swimming once dh finishes work, will ride bikes over, to save fuel! Swimming is free :)

I've got £40 in Clubcard vouchers, so that will pay for a day out once tripled.

We have a river really near us, which we haven't been to for ages either, I'm sure the dog will enjoy a stroll over there too.

For the little ones, we always did summer scrap books.
Photos and drawings and memories of things we did that week.
It kept them busy on days I was busy

confusedofengland · 19/07/2022 17:48

Odeon tickets are 5 for £22 with Groupon atm. Extra 5% off using code PROMO. And over 12% cashback via top cashback, I think.

greywinds · 19/07/2022 18:46

Summer scrap book is a great idea

PleaseYourselfandEatTheCrusts · 20/07/2022 08:39
