Sold car, buyer took log book - help!!

I've been a bit stupid and I'm in a bit of a panic.

I sold my car on Friday in cash. It was a stressful day due to myriad reasons so I wasn't 100% on the ball and it's only today I've realised I handed him the whole V5 form when I shouldn't have!

What should I do now? I haven't got an address or anything, just a company name that was on the Whatsapp account the buyer was messaging me through - although I now can't find any evidence online of this company's existence. Is there anything I can do to protect myself if the buyer decides not to send the form off and doesn't give me his address?

Just e-mail DVLA that you are no longer the registered keeper of the car. I had to do this when my DH sold a car on my behalf and gave the buyer the V5 without getting a name or anything. I got an acknowledgement within a few days (that was pre-covid though).

That's such a relief, thanks! I'll do that then!

Same happened here, I need to notify DVLA but can only find a postal address to write to. You mentioned that you emailed them, what email address did you send the info to please? Thanks in advance!

Hi @Ribena11

Sorry I've just noticed this post.

It was a few years ago and I've changed e-mail accounts since then, so no longer have the details.

Unfortunately it seems the only way you can notify them now without the V5 number is by snail mail (how very last millennium).

What if I don’t have a V5C?

If you don’t have the V5C, you are able to notify us of the sale of the vehicle, by writing to:

DVLA
Swansea
SA99 1BD

Please include:

  • Your full name and address
  • The vehicle registration number
  • Make & model
  • Date of sale
  • Who the vehicle has been sold to
  • Your signature

What happens next?

When DVLA have been informed, you should receive an acknowledgement letter confirming that you are no longer responsible for the vehicle.
You should receive a refund for any complete remaining months of your vehicle tax by post (if applicable).

How long will my application take?

All our services are operating within normal turnaround times as paper applications are being processed within 3 to 4 weeks.
Please allow 4 weeks for your new documents to be sent to you if applying by post. Please do not call us within those 4 weeks as your application will be processing and we will not be able to provide further information.
Information regarding any DVLA services can be found at: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/dvla-services-update.

Hi @Ribena11 , I can confirm, as @Mochudubh said, I ended up writing to them via snail mail, and they wrote back a few weeks later to confirm I was no longer the owner!
