Getting hot dog to drink water

He's doing his best to keep cool, has a cooling mat which he sleeps on or part on but I've noticed he's not been drinking much.

He's not panting or anything so I'm guessing he's coping- but I do worry.

I've got an old calpol syringe which I've loaded with water and have gently given him a few loads of water that way which he's accepted so all good I suppose.

I've left a few bowls of water around the house so there is plenty available.

At our vet's suggestion we've been adding a bit of water to our dog's food and offering her ice cubes with its of chopped carrot in them. She also loves any scraps of ice from the bag straight in to her bowl. I've also moved her food bowl away from the water bowl. She prefers a glazed pottery bowl, metal or plastic annoy her.

A friend of mine put a post from a vet. It said you should never give a dog ice cold water/ice cubes/ice lollies in hot weather, the thermodynamic system in dogs registers they are cold, consequently the body heats up and they just had a dog die. I've got 2 both long haired and the trundle round finding cool spots and shade, one drinks a lot, the other not much BUT he will come and find you, walk to the bowl in the kitchen and stare at the bowl and then me! He does have moist food.

@nannybeach that post that's been circulating for years on Fb is incorrect. You can give a dog that is well, ice or ice cubes in water etc perfectly safely.
You should never give a dog that's suffering from heatstroke/heat exhaustion ice/ice in water. It's too much of a shock. That was the original post by vets which got misread and turned into "never give dogs ice". Wrongly. It's only those already suffering heat issues who can't have it.

Dogs don’t need lots more water in hot weather like we do, because they don’t primarily lose heat by sweating like humans do. He’ll be fine drinking what he wants.

echt · 22/07/2022 01:38

He's an animal and not confuzzled with the human bollocks about "hydrating". He will drink when he's thirsty and find the coolest place in the house when it's hot.

The best things humans can do is make sure clean water is available and a cool place accessible. For the dog, too. Smile

Mine have been having a splash of goats milk with water a couple of times a day during this heat. They love it.
Also blitzed up some veg and fruit and froze in ice cube tray. Great for quickly stuffing kongs etc and as a tasty treat. One crunches hers the other licks it till it melts 🤣

We were told to put a few frozen peas in their water bowl. It cools the water down and they end up drinking more whilst they try to catch the peas that are bobbing around!

my 22 year old song has to go and put his hands in the water bowl and our dog drinks loads of water like that from his hands, but usually she will drink when thirsty.

mathanxiety · 22/07/2022 06:12

Throw some ice cubes on your kitchen floor.

My husband is a vet and he says it isn't true about ice cubes for dogs. Maybe don't give them loads at once?

berrieslovely · 22/07/2022 22:57

I put a little splash of milk in the dogs’ bowls and they both lapped the whole bowl up straight away when previously they hadn’t been interested

XenoBitch · 22/07/2022 23:02

A splash of goat's milk might get them drinking.
Or add some water to their food.
