How do you manage holiday insomnia?

I'm very lucky to be away on holiday, in a lovely hotel with DH and DS. Heavenly cool room and very grateful to coincidentally be away from the UK during the heatwave.

But as per usual, I can't sodding sleep, whilst the rest of the family snore and fart away. I am so envious of their actual ability to sleep when away from home.

I'm prone to insomnia at the best of times, but largely I manage it well at home. Here, I'm desperate to drop off so I can make the most of the day tomorrow, and not be super grumpy wife/mummy. Instead, every time I try and get back to sleep, waves of anxiety grip me.

Not sleeping on holiday has always been an issue, so well prepped with nytol, lavender oil, guided sleep meditations (which just seem to induce anxiety!) and podcasts etc. Different types of holiday don't make it better or worse (although self catering is preferable so I can go into a different room).

Does anyone have any tips on how to manage holiday insomnia? Or can empathise?

Sorry no advice or tips OP but I am exactly the same . I can’t bloody sleep anywhere but my own bed and when on holiday I’m awake most of the night .

calmlakes · 18/07/2022 03:17

I would just use melatonin to be honest.

Commiserations Chocolateandroses! Hard work isn't it? How do you get through the night? I try not to get stuck into my book - but I'm wondering if I should try and enjoy the peace overnight?

Definitely agree with Melatonin. I find slow release is best for me. I seem to be able to drop off ok but wake between 1&3 and can't get back to sleep again. The slow release means I can fall asleep again even when I wake and has saved many holidays!

Go see the local pharmacist and schmooze them for some sleeping tablets.

Ask for zopiclone and see if they can give you it

My DD had some melatonin prescribed and she rarely uses it. I use a few for this very issue it's like I'm so hyped up by the time we get away I can't relax.
Only small dose 3/4mg but it does the trick and I wake feeling fine not groggy.

For tonight? Take two paracetamol. It always sends me off to sleep. And is medically harmless as an occasional measure.

rookiemere · 23/07/2022 14:22

I bring Boots Sleepeze with me - only really need it if I have jet lag though.

calmlakes · 23/07/2022 15:11

Hope it works OP. Have a good trip.

I've found 2 x 25mg of Phenergen great. Saves arguing with the GP to get Zopiclone.
