And I'm in a bit of a state.
He's only 10, started feeling a bit ill yesterday morning and now he's having an appendectomy.
Hold my hand, while I sit waiting on the ward, and tell me he's going to be fine. Please.

My son had the same at aged 10. Apparently more common than I realised for boys at that age.

I know it's hard, but there's no reason to think he really will be anything other than fine Flowers

Afterfire · 17/07/2022 21:29

Aw op I’m sorry for you and your son, I have a son the same age and I can only imagine how worried you are but these things are so routine now and I’m sure he’s in very good hands. Thinking of you 💐💐

LuvMyBoyz · 17/07/2022 21:30

Handhold from me.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 17/07/2022 21:31

He will absolutely be fine. Starting to feel ill yesterday to diagnosis and op today sounds like you jumped straight on it. Look at it this way, once he has had it out, you never need worry about it again. My very close friend had a call from her son on a gap year trek around India with what turned out to appendicitis! He will bounce back in no time.

Dinoteeth · 17/07/2022 21:33

He'll be fine and will be happy to show off his war wound. I did mine in my 20s.

Ive also sat waiting on my kid coming out of theater. Worse for me than him. Its two years ago but when I think about it it feels like yesterday.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 17/07/2022 21:34

He will be fine.

InTheShadeOfTheFigTree · 17/07/2022 21:35

Hi will be fine. Ali those people in theatre are they just to look after him and bring him back to you safely very soon.

I used to work in theatres, and appendicectomies were amongst the most common emergencies we saw. Whilst it's so worryng for you , it'll be very straightforward for all the staff.

He'll be back with you before you know it Flowers

porkypine · 17/07/2022 21:36

Ah that's excellent news that he's already in surgery given he only started feeling unwell yesterday.

I am in hospital ridiculously frequently with my complex children. It always seems worse for the parents than the kids. He's in good hands and you'll get through this, I promise.

InTheShadeOfTheFigTree · 17/07/2022 21:36

there just to look after him

AtrociousCircumstance · 17/07/2022 21:37

He’ll be fine. The HCPs are looking after him and it was obviously responded to v quickly.

Anything you can distract yourself with - tv shows, movies, YouTube, Insta? He’ll be out of surgery and waking up in no time.

Northernlurker · 17/07/2022 21:38

This is a classic case of something that's totally routine for the hospital and utterly exceptional for you. So completely reasonable to be out of your mind with worry but he will be absolutely fine. Hope the hospital has air con!

SpaghettiSquash · 17/07/2022 21:40

He'll be fine and will feel so much better very soon. My DS had his appendix out a few months ago. Even though it had ruptured by the time they operated (7 hour wait in A&E) he bounced back really quickly and was back at school in a week.

thechiefstew · 17/07/2022 21:43

Hope he recovers quickly - waiting seems like the longest time ever though

feellikemyselfagain · 17/07/2022 21:45

You poor thing @carameldecaflatte. The best you can do is hold your nerve whilst your wait and just know that everything is going to be absolutely fine. He's in great hands and must be a very routine operation, which is another thing to try to feel confident in. I play the alphabet game with myself if I'm feeling very worried or anxious. Try to name a vegetable beginning with each letter of the alphabet, then countries, then names, then whatever you can come up with. Really helps focus your mind in the present and less time to worry. Let us know how he gets on and all the best to you. He'll be milking the situation before you know it!

Luredbyapomegranate · 17/07/2022 21:45

Hand hold. It’s horrible waiting, but he will be absolutely fine. (And have a dramatic story to tell his friends.)

Lindy2 · 17/07/2022 21:48

Are they able to do keyhole surgery to remove the appendix? If so I'm sure he'll be back feeling much better very soon.

If they have to make an incision then he'll be sore for a couple of weeks but will recover quickly.

10 year old boys are very resilient and once the operation is done at least you know the problem is completely sorted and can't reoccur.

peachy3 · 17/07/2022 21:48

Good job for getting him seen super quick OP, he’s going to be totally fine! The most worrying part (rupture) is over and he’s in the best hands to get that pesky little appendix out. My best friend had an appendectomy at around the same age, I was so worried about him but after his surgery he was just happy to have some time off school😁

carameldecaflatte · 17/07/2022 21:51

Thank you so much for your replies and hand holds. I really appreciate it.

Logically I absolutely know he will be fine but sitting in a darkened ward with my eleventyhundredth cup of Tea, my ipad and all the "what if's" for company isn't much fun!

I fell apart a bit after he went to sleep clutching his cuddly toy cat. Wasn't expecting that, not sure what i was expecting to be honest.

The porter just took his bed down to recovery so hopefully not too much longer.

Deep breaths.

Most likely it will be keyhole. With a nice quick recovery.

GetOvaIt2 · 17/07/2022 21:53

Hand hold here. He'll be bouncing around before you know it!

carameldecaflatte · 17/07/2022 21:54

@feellikemyselfagain - will try the vegetable game, sounds like a good distraction.

My daughter had her appendix out aged 10 . She was absolutely fine despite having a really manky appendix. He will be home tomorrow and you will have a great excuse to Mummy him ,lying on the sofa with a fan on watching TV !
My son had his out aged 17 during his A level mocks …he was absolutely fine as well even though it was more stressful because of the timing.💐

FayeGovan · 17/07/2022 21:58

Aww, handhold from me too.

eosmum · 17/07/2022 21:58

He will be fine, had mine done at 24 weeks pregnant and it was a breeze, DS has his by keyhole and was back to school by the end of the week, worst part was the gas afterwards. Best of luck.

Dinoteeth · 17/07/2022 22:00

Op but what a rotten time to do it right at start of school holidays (assuming your England). Operation and all the rest and not even a day of school from a kids POV that's really rotten.
