Anyone experienced throat problems with anxiety and/or perimenopause?

I've been having problems with a sore/tight throat for over a year now. GP says everything looks fine. I'm also very anxious and suspect peri menopausal.

I dont know if the throat issues are being made worse by the anxiety or could possibly be caused by a hormone crash.

I've started on Escitolopram so I'm hoping that might help but wondered if anyone else had experienced similar.

That is exactly what I get Perimom . 18 months in and still the same. Drs said nothing wrong. Mine is always worse in the evening when it feels so tight and uncomfortable.

My DH had anxiety diagnosed when he had a dry weird almost retch throat. Was prescribed ADs. But he swapped jobs which seemed to do the trick.

He is not peri.

Has anyone mentioned globus sensation? It feels like you have a lump in your throat (or at least it does for me). It's very uncomfortable and often painful. I find it gets worse the more anxious I am, and is often the first sign I have that my anxiety is getting worse. I find sucking something strong such as a throat sweet or mint or using vick helps to stop it.
Good luck in getting to the bottom of it.

Perlunk do you also mind me asking how old you are? I'm only 42, GP says too young for it to be peri and I'm too young for HRT.

Your GP is an idiot. You can absolutely be in peri at the age of 42, and you are not at all too young to need HRT.

I have been peri since I hit 40 years old. I had to fight tooth and nail and finally at the age of 44 I was given HRT.

Ask to see another doctor.

These are the symptoms I was battling with:

•hot flushes.
•maaaajor anxiety increase.
•rampant mood swings, short temper.
•bouts of crying out of nowhere.
•restless legs to rival Michael Flatley in Riverdance.
•Horrible nausea 24/7, leading to vomiting when bleeding.
•my whole body ached, walking upstairs made my joints burn and left me breathless.
•zero energy.
• utter exhaustion but not getting enough sleep. Brain refused to calm down.
•memory loss, kept forgetting things.
•drying skin.
•revoltingly heavy and painful periods lasting 9+ days, sometimes half a month.
•debilitating headaches.
• multiple trips to the loo at night, I'm talking 5-6 times.
• hair dried out.
•brittle nails.
•always thirsty.
•unable to use internal methods of menstrual products because it was horribly painful - this can be a sign of vaginal atrophy.

...and that's not all of it. Does any of that sound familiar?

I have been peri since I hit 40 years old.

I concur. Your GP is an absolute idiot, as are most of them regarding peri-menopause.

I, too, was in Peri at 40. I went to a private clinic and was on HRT by 41. Best decision I ever made.

@RavenT sorry you have been going through this for so long.! Mine came out of the blue after Covid and lingering post nasal drip as a result. I don’t get it daily thank goodness but when I do, I find that I’m fine when I get up and as the day goes on it comes and goes sometimes lasting for an hour or two sometimes 6 hours like yesterday. Can’t figure out the problem. I’m have an appointment with ENT to get endoscopy. I also want to get an mri. Have you gotten any tests done?

Perimom · 13/12/2022 01:55

@RavenT also do you have anxiety?

Strawberrypicnic · 13/12/2022 01:59

Hi OP, I'm not in perimenopause but I have had severe anxiety (still medicated) and when I saw your thread title I immediately thought of globus sensation. I used to get it a lot with severe anxiety and it can be quite scary! It is ultimately harmless though.

Perimom · 13/12/2022 02:09

@SheilaWilde did you ever find out if it was due to Peri or not? Did you have any tests done? I’m 51 and anxiety & low mood hit me out of the blue this august sort of at the same time as the throat tightness. Never had any of these problems before. Mine comes and goes It is the weirdest thing

Yes approx a year ago I went to ent for an endoscopy and all was clear. And that was that.

Mine goes through phases and always worsens as the day goes on. I'm 46 and have been on hrt for a year. I find warm drinks help and sleeping slightly raised. I also take citalopram for anxiety. It is particularly bad at the moment.

Perimom · 13/12/2022 13:48

Do you think yours is due to anxiety @RavenT ? I sometimes think mine could be due to anxiety. I developed anxiety a few months ago as a result of peri menopause however I do find that even when I’m not even anxious with anxiety I still get it so maybe peri menopause is causing this? I’m at a lost.

RavenT · 09/01/2023 16:26

Sorry for very late reply @Perimom . I don't know, as I've always been an anxious person since the year dot! The throat issue is new to the last couple of years, so I'm assuming it's more a 'mid 40s' thing....
Randomly, dairy products make it much more noticeable. Yogurts, ice cream etc, it always flares up.
